Most of us know Kudremukh from our Geography books in schools as the peak that bears a resemblance to a horse's face and has a plenty of iron bearing rocks and I did realize it is appropriately named. The peak is at about 1900 meters from the sea level and is one of the highest peaks in Karnataka.
Reaching the starting point took us about 3 hours from the Mangalore railway station. And from there on the trek to the peak is about 20 km both ways and starting early seems like a good idea. We started at 9 am and were back by 6 pm. The trek is mostly easy, except at 2 or 3 places where it gets really steep. A guide is must as it is a National Park,so that does for permissions and wild animals on loose. Drinking water is not a problem as there are plenty of fresh water streams all along the way.
Note: If you are fortunate/unfortunate, you might spot some wild animals, we spotted a Barasingha and were warned about a tiger.
