Travelling, through its vibrant experiences, teaches us a lot of things — from a sense of freedom to understanding of different cultures. One thing that travelling ensures is a good time and greater memories, and if you’re lucky, sometimes vacations can also lead you to find romance in the most extraordinary ways. But if you don’t act smartly, these extraordinary times can turn into hideous experiences that may haunt you for life.

When you plan to hook up during your vacations in a foreign land you need to be cognizant of a lot of things to ensure a sweet experience for you and your partner. Here’s a list of 11 things to keep in mind for when you plan to hook up on vacation.

Use technology wisely!

We live in times when a pair of earbuds can instantly translate languages removing communication barriers while you’re in a foreign land. This means that you can use technology to your favour and ensure a great experience like never before. There are multiple online applications that allow you to connect with different people, but remember, not all of them ensure authenticity. Choose the most trusted options and steer clear from catfishing attempts by only engaging with verified accounts. Platforms like Bumble and Tinder have been known to ensure authenticity of users ensuring a good experience. Also, it’s always a good idea to do a thorough research about your match on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram before you meet them. It's always better to be safe.

Clarity can avoid calamity!

While setting up accounts on different dating applications, clearly state your interests and intent. If you share your mind promptly, like-minded people around you will find it easy to connect with you. It will also ensure that your experience with them goes smoothly if you’re mentally connected over similar things. Not being clear on the intent can often lead to bitter experiences that you wouldn’t want to carry back home with you.

Remember where you are!

With change in regions, cultures change and so do people. Not every place can ensure you similar experiences. Well, to put it simply, you’ll not get a tan on the beach in Manali!

While some places like Goa have people with forward thinking and a majority of like-minded people, there’s still a lot of places where hooking up might result into bitter experiences. And don’t even get me started on PDA, I’ve heard some really horrific occurrences. Things get further difficult for LGBTQ+ community because it’s 2021 but certain Indian communities still live in 1980s. So, be mindful of where you are and plan your approach accordingly and you’ll be good.

Let someone know!

While hooking up is all fun and cool, you must always ensure that you’re cautious. Let your friends know where you are or where you’re going by sharing your live location so that in case things go wrong, they can take quick actions and prevent you from an accident.

Catch feelings, not STDs!

Not a joke, you can always be direct in asking people for negative reports to avoid such disastrous experiences. Use protection, get checked frequently if you do this often and be open in expecting the same from the other party. Irresponsibility in such situations can lead to inescapable ramifications.

Don’t be stupid!

There’s a different between taking a chance and entering a hazard, understand it. Do be open to new ideas and experiments but don’t ignore some clear signs of suspicion. If you’re a solo traveler in a strange city, a lot can go wrong if you’re not careful. I don’t want to sound like that misogynistic TT from Jab we met and be like Akeli ladki khuli tijori ki tarah hoti hai but bad experiences can happen to anyone.

DON’T share personal details, photos and spaces with anyone unless you’re completely sure that you’re safe. DON’T drink any beverage offered by a stranger unless it has been prepared in front of you. DON’T agree to go to places that you know are known for being shady/criminal activities/are lonely. DO make sure that you’re not being recorded.

Are you doing it for a rebound?

Recently had a breakup and you have a strong desire to prove your self-worth by earning a hookup with a total stranger? Well, you don’t need to prove anything to anyone, so if this is your only motivation, maybe you need to reevaluate you decision. But if you think this could help you move on, then why not!? Good times never killed anyone! (Well, they did in some cases). But make sure you don’t end up turning that hookup meet to a venting session about your sad breakup! (sob sob)

Don’t get attached!

Trust me, there would be nothing more romantic than finding love in a beautiful picturesque location, maybe under a thousand stars, but don’t get too hung up on this overly romantic idea that could drive people away or leave you disappointed. When preparing yourself for this experience, do remember that you’ll meet people from different parts of the world whom you might never see again in future, so once the vacation ends, that experience ends too and you can keep them in your happy memories, if you want, but don’t go with the expectations of wedding bells and flower arrangements for your wedding. If both of you consensually agree to stay in touch, that’s a different story.

Don’t run into familiar faces!

That’s an absolute nightmare! Going to a different city, setting up an account, getting to know someone new and as soon as you plan to meet them, you run into pados vaali Sharma Aunty. Even hooking up with someone you already know from the past can be a little confusing because you’re never sure if the other person is completely understanding your idea of a one-time hook up. So definitely avoid this.

Be ready to take a chance!

Well, what stories would you tell your grandkids to get the cool grandparent points if you never took a chance?

These experiences can be a bit stressful and scary, especially in a different city but that’s the whole point. Being away from the people you know can help you experiment with who you are and it lets you be yourself with no judgement. Meet new people, find versions of yourself that even you didn’t know and fall in love with yourself, even if your true self is a little wild! :P

Offset, don’t regret!

If you think you won’t be able to follow the hookup rule and would end up crying next morning with regret, then this isn’t for you. Don’t waste your time.

So the next time you’re on vacation, try something new and meet new people because they teach you different things and can get you some good time too. Travelling gives you a good break from the monotone of life and adding a little flavour of romance can surely perk up your experience, as long as you are cautious.
