The Beas Kund Trek is not only a scenic and adventurous trek, but also a trek that is steeped in history and legend. The region has been inhabited since ancient times, and has witnessed the rise and fall of many kingdoms and empires. The name Beas is derived from the Sanskrit word Vipasha, which means “free from bondage”. The river Beas is considered to be one of the five holy rivers of India, and is mentioned in many scriptures and epics.

The most famous legend associated with the Beas Kund Trek is that of the sage Vyas, who is believed to have written the epic Mahabharata at this place. According to the legend, Vyas was the son of the sage Parashara and the fisherwoman Satyavati. He was born on an island in the river Yamuna, and was gifted with extraordinary intelligence and wisdom. He became the teacher of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, the protagonists and antagonists of the Mahabharata, respectively. He also divided the Vedas, the ancient scriptures of Hinduism, into four parts, and taught them to his four disciples.

Vyas is said to have meditated at the Beas Kund, where he composed the Mahabharata, the longest epic poem in the world. He also dictated the epic to his scribe, Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and success. The Beas Kund is therefore considered to be a sacred and auspicious place, where one can attain spiritual enlightenment and blessings.

Beas Kund Trek Reviews

My second day began early at 7:00 am itself since I had to cover a long distance on this particular day. The trail from Dhundi to Bakarthach(the second campsite on this trek, though I did not camp here because of extreme cold weather and snowfall) is well marked with blue arrows on boulders. This journey will take you through bushes, multiple stream crossings, boulders and surprising view every passing hour. Now, when you reach Bakarthach you'll see a hill of boulders ahead of you, get ready to exert your body physically! Your path in the boulders can be tricky and confusing, your beacon lights in the boulders are the CAIRNS(I'll show what cairn is in a picture below). The cairns will be your best friend while in the boulders section. When you complete this section, you'll see a well marked trail descending downwards, keep following it and you reach down the hill where a stream flows in front of you. Now comes the most confusing part! You will see multiple waterfalls in front of you(though far away), BEAS KUND is located below the waterfall that is left of the extreme right waterfall.(in hindi- right se dusri waterfall ke neeche). You'll not see the kund until you reach near the waterfall since it is at a descending slope. Just get past this stage and reach BEAS KUND, the point where the river Beas originates. I spent 45 minutes sitting by the side of kund, walking around and clicking pictures in multiple angles and enjoying the 180 degrees white snowy mountain view just behind you. You'll remember this place for very long!! Absolute gem for the Eyes. I trekked back Dhundi and reached at 4:00 pm, I was lucky enough to find a Tata Sumo of a trek organising company which was going Manali, I asked the driver if he would take me back to Manali and he happily agreed! I reached Manali at 6:30 pm, with a mesmerising sunset view and a great conversation with the local driver from Kullu. Some things to consider for this trek-- 1.) If you plan to travel Manali to Solang by bus, keep the bus timing in mind and start as early as possible. 2.) The best itinerary that I would suggest is- DAY 1: MANALI to SOLANG to DHUNDI and spend a night at Dhundi, or trek to BAKARTHACH in case you've reached Dhundi early. DAY 2: Start your trek early from Dhundi, reach Bakarthach(keep your bag inside a camp here) and carry a small backpack with food, water, headlamp and whistle to Beas Kund and return back to Bakarthach and have a night stay here. DAY 3: Start early from Bakarthach in the morning and reach Dhundi and then Solang then Manali(Dhundi to Solang most probably by hitchhiking!!). 3.) Follow the 'LEAVE NO TRACE' principle while on the mountains. Thank you for reading(Some more pictures below!)
We were up by 5:00 AM and started early as we had to trek to a height of 2,000 feet and then come down again to our camp site at Lohali. Alas! today was the day we would reach the summit and see the kund which is believed to be a holy sight where Rishi Vyas used to take baths. The trail was an extremely steep ascent yet views so magnificent that one could hardly think or complain about the fatigue. The trail was awe-inspiring with snow clad peaks throughout the trek. Since, to our luck, the weather was clear so we had a glorious view of Pir Panjal Range and Dhauladhar Range. As we trekked towards the summit, we were welcomed by Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Ladakhi and Friendship Peaks which were spectacular. We reached the summit in 2 and a half hours; which is indeed triumphant as our trek leader assumed we would take a minimum of 4 hours. We had an amazing and beyond imagination enthusiastic group. There is no beautiful feeling than a group of strangers with different interests going on together, as a team, to witness the nature in its finest. It was amazing! We reached our summit which was a ridge line above the Beas Kund as it is not possible to trek to the banks of the lake. After enjoying a heartful time at the summit and clicking ton loads of pictures we started back with the steep descent which was waiting for us. We trekked down to Lady Leg which had frozen pile of snowfall and our super fun trek leaders made us slide through thesnow. With our hands, legs and bums frozen, it was an amusing experience and our laughter knew no bounds. From here, we trekked down through the valley with purple, blue and yellow flowers adorning the trails and reached our campsite by 1:oo PM. Starving badly, we were served with hot Rajma Chawal which is exactly the sort of thing we needed. Post this we had a leisure day at our campsite and played various games (advantage of having no network connectivity). It reminded me of the simpler times!
Feel the grandeur of Himalayan Trekking, Beaskund, Manali After exploring a foreign land, time to be home but my travel journey didn't stop there. I still had lots more to explore in my own country having vast geography and culture. The next I planned a rare trekking trip to Pious Beas Kund. Walked down on Himalayas finding peace and content. I accompanied a group of trained trekkers and started journey from Solang Valley to Beas kund, a three days trek summit. By bringing myself over the edge and back, I discovered a passion to live my days fully, a conviction that will sustain me like sweet water on the periodically barren plain of our short lives.
An early start to the day and a short climb up the elevation through Bhoj Patr will get us to Beas kund. Bhoj patr will gets its name from the fact that the area has lots of Bhoj Patr (Brich) trees. After 5 hrs trekking we reach our final destination Beas kund, the birth place of one of the major river of north India. The legend is that sage vyas, the author of Mahabharata meditated here. After a full day excursion in the beas kund (a small type lake or pleatue) we came back to bakartach in the evening. Overnight stay in the camp sites of ABVIMAS.
Best time to visit:May to October How to reach:Take an overnight bus to Manali, from there take a local bus or taxi to Solang Valley. The trek starts from here and can take 8 to 9 hours depending on your speed. Trail:The trail to Beas Kund starts from Solang Valley. The first stop is 8km away and is completely paved. After Dhundi, you reach the Bakar Thach or meadow, after which Beas Kund is just 3km away. The trail is fascinating, beautiful and offers a lovely array views throughout. There are a few tricky patches and river-crossings on the route.
