Those visiting the beach on certain nights at Vaadhoo Island will be treated to a sight of the shore glowing in luminescent blue-green colour. It is sometimes referred to as the “Sea of Stars” because that is just the kind of effect it offers as the water and sand twinkle against the night sky.

Generally, July to February is the best time to see the glowing beach at Vaadhoo Island, though it is possible to witness this phenomenon outside these months too. Additionally, the darkness of a new moon night can help to intensify the glow. In the Maldives, things to do such as witnessing such a spectacle will be truly unforgettable.

The Reason it Glows

The glowing beach has nothing to do with the sand but rather bioluminescent plankton! The glow is caused due to bioluminescence, a naturally occurring phenomenon of living organisms emitting a light; in this case, the plankton made up of aquatic microbes glows when agitated or moved.
