A peace and calm version of Varanasi in the heart of India, located at the north banks of Narmada is a holy town known as Maheshwar. Narmada is one of the very few rivers of India that flows westwards and drains into Arabian sea.
Anytime you're on Mumbai-Indore highway, keep an eye on when you cross Narmada river if you're coming from Mumbai side. Take the next right turn, then 10 more kilometers and you'll be on the north banks of Narmada with clean and pristine ghats. You'll come across many hand loom stores selling unique cotton saris with silk thread work. These ghats and saris are the geographical indicator of Maheshwar.
There are many places to visit in Maheshwar which one can visit in a day or two. Attached to the Narmada ghat is the Ahilya Bai Fort which you may recognize from many of the bollywood movies ( recently Padman movie is shot at Maheshwar). You'll come across the bright colored paintings on all the walls of the surrounding area of ghats.
Visit all the temples in the day time in the surrounding area. Before sunset come to the ghat and take a boat to the temple situated at a river island. As Narmada river flows from East to West, you'll witness the sunset in the direction of river flow which is mesmerizing from the island.
