A significant part of the history of the Maratha empire, if you are in Pune, this fort is a must-visit. Located at around 40-45 kms. from Pune, the best way to reach this is by hiring a cab or driving if you have your own car.
The fort in itself is enormous, and the climb is actually steep. However, there are a lot of things to see in the fort. The views from the edges of the fort are some of the most spectacular ones. You can see the entire hill range, and the sun rays coming from between the clouds make the entire area look stunning.
At the top of the fort, there are various important points such as tof khana (the places where cannons used to be stored), horse stables area (made inside the fort at a location that keeps the area cooler), the samadhi of Tanaji Malusare (who bravely laid down his life to win the fort) and many other significant points.
Also, across the fort, you will find tons of small shops selling Maharashtrian food items such as pithla & bhakri, vangi bharit, etc. If you are on the fort, do taste these as it is the specialty in the area and taste super delicious. We tasted the pithla & bhakri combination for merely Rs. 40 that also came with two types of chutneys.
However, the main problem is the road to reach the actual base of the fort. Many people park vehicles on both sides of the approach road if the parking above is full. This parking keeps on dragging to a point where it becomes impossible to move your vehicle. In our case, being a Sunday, we had to stop our vehicle 2.5 kms from the main gate or Darwaza of the fort and had to trek the entire way. Also, at the start of the approach road, government guys will charge Rs. 100. Yet the mismanagement of traffic on the road is rampant.
But leaving aside this issue, the Sinhgad fort is a must-visit place with scenic views. Also, have at least 2 to 3 hrs. in hand to complete the entire fort.
