Visit to any place is incomplete without knowing the food habits, this gets you closer to culture and helps you understand the city well. For the place like Mumbai its mix of traditional maharastrian food to Irani to continental cuisine to coastal.
Start you day with going to Mumbai style café for breakfast, they serve keema fry, variety of omlette, missal etc accompanied with pav and maska bun with tea. We tried for Ramashray at Matunga famous for south indian food but looking at the big queue we headed to Gulshan Café on the same road.
For the coastal food fans, this place is paradise. The fish fry was beyond words served along with solkhadi(made with kokum and coconut). We ordered Chicken special and Fish Thali, every item on thali is made with perfection loaded with coconut.
For the healthy eaters, try out Kitchen Garden the salads and sandwiches are fresh and give a feel as just picked from farm.
We travelled all the way to Lonavala to eat here. It is made in a huge open place covered with greenery all around. The kebabs were dry but the chicken patiyala was upto the mark and it was worth travelling all the way.
The authentic nawabi style food, you get mouth watering kebabs, biryani, beda roti, even the buffet option. To satisfy the sweet tooth have caramel custard 100% veg, yes….you hear it rite its veg. Delicacies like caramel custard, phirni, pineapple halwa and sahitukda can be found in each corner of city and the meal is incomplete without this.
How can we just forget vada pav, Mumbai is famous for this. We have to wait in long queue before we could find way, but the taste was worth it. The chutneys were lip-smacking, this was the best vada pav I had in my life. Definitely find time and visit this place.
We missed on parsi food, there are many cafes that serve authentic parsi meal. Do find time and visit one of them.
