History About Lonar Lake
Lonar Lake, also known as Lonar crater, is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument, saline, soda lake, located at Lonar in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, India. Lonar Lake was created by an asteroid collision with earth impact during the Pleistocene Epoch. It is one of the four known, hyper-velocity, impact craters in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth.
The other three basaltic impact structures are in southern Brazil. Lonar Lake has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometres (3,900 ft) and is about 137 metres (449 ft) below the crater rim. The meteor crater rim is about 1.8 kilometres (5,900 ft) in diameter. The crater’s age is usually estimated to be 52,000 to 6,000 years
How To Reach Lonar Lake
First thing is to go to Lonar, then the easiest way is to go from Aurangabad. Because if you want, you can also see the famous caves of Aurangabad, Ajanta and Ellora. Aurangabad is a very big city, so you can come here by any route. To get here, you will get trains, buses and planes. You can also come to Aurangabad by train, plane and bus.
The Distance from Aurangabad to Lonar is 135 kilometres, which is about 3 hours away. To reach it, you have to use the MTDC bus of Maharashtra. Which you will get from Central Bus Stand Aurangabad. You can also take an OLA Taxi Service from Aurangabad which will then bring you back to Aurangabad.
Where To Stay
MTDC Resort is a great option if you want to stay in Lonar. If you come with a family, then it is a very best option that charges you 1500 to 2000 rupees for a day. This resort is located very close to the lake, so you will be very easy to get to the lake from there.
Many tourists also visit Aurangabad besides staying here. But I think you should stay here for a day. According to your budget, you will easily find a room for a single traveller in Lonar for Rs 400 to 600.
Places To Visit
Lonar Lake
Lonar Lake is the main tourist attraction here and you can go quite close to Lonar Lake. There are two routes to reach the Lonar Lake, one can go to MTDC by road or the other way to Gomukh Temple. I went through the path of Gomukh temple, but the good thing about this path is that you will find many temples on this path.
You have to do 30 minutes jungle trek here which is quite easy. The special thing here is that peacock sounds will be heard in this forest. If you come here during the rainy season, you may find it difficult due to mud in the lake’s premises. In the year 2015, an area of 3.80 km has been declared as Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary by the government.
There are 12 temples on the banks of the Lonar Lake, which belong to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shankar. Most of them are now in ruins and there is no maintenance. Most of the temples are built during the reign of the Chalukya dynasty. Some temples have been maintained here, which I will tell you further
Kamalaja Devi Temple
This is the only temple visible from the Gomukh temple on the banks of the lake, all other temples have disappeared in the forest of the lake. This temple is much better than other temples.
The temple has an idol of the Goddess and on the side of the temple, you will see a well. From here you will see the Watch Tower, if you trek over the mountains above, then you can reach this tower.
Gomukh Temple
This temple is one of the major tourist places here. Gomukh means that the cow’s face will be seen here that there is a cow’s face from where the spring of water comes out. The special thing about this temple is that people come from far away to bathe.
Daityasudan Temple
This temple is at a distance of 2 km in Lonar village. The special thing here is that the sculpture done on this temple is really beautiful. The sculpture done on this temple is similar to the Khajuraho sculpture. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
