Devkund Ride and Camping

It was our 1st monsoon ride of 2017. We planned to Malshej Ghat but at the last moment we changed our plan to Devkund. We wanted to ride for 3-4 hours, we were also looking for Waterfall and camping. So devkund is the best option for us.

We were 7 people Me, Viru, Patu, Chupya, Chaubey, akshay and bhandi. There is a unsolved mystery behind name Bhandi. As we were 7 people and we had 3 bikes so Bhandi and Chaubey decided to come by State Transport (ST) till Kolad, and Kolad to Devkund distance we covered by triple seat.

We reached at 01.00 pm at Bhira dam which is base village for Devkund. The Dam and surrounding place is very beautiful. We took some photographs and spend some time at dam. At 02.00 pm we took our lunch. We were waiting for another group to join us because our guide has only one rope for trekking. So after lunch we spend some time in kundalika River. That other group came late and finally at 03.30 pm we started our trek towards Devkund Waterfall.

Trek was really beautiful. We have to go through jungle, we have to cross 3 water springs to reach Devkund. 2nd water spring is quite difficult; we need rope to cross that area if water level and force is high. I suggest do not cross this kind of crossings without experts. One member from other group was almost lost his life. He should thank our guide who saved his life.

Finally after 2 and half hours adventurous trek we reached at Devkund Waterfall. It is the heaven, as per name Devkund it is really a God’s Waterfall. Crystal clear water coming direct from heaven. We spent just half hour in waterfall. Because we reached late and we wanted to reached back to our camp before dark. Swimming in waterfall is dangerous, so don’t try it. So at 06.30 pm we started our retuen journey to our camp. While coming back our friend Bhandi tried his fishing skills with our guide in Bhira Dam. And even they got two fishes. We reached at hotel at 08.30 pm. We were very tired and hungry. We had Kanda bhaji and Chai. Feel refreshed. Our tents were ready, so without wasting time we went to our tents. We are college friends and meeting after long time, to college ki yaade taaza ho gai. Wo college ke kisse wo college ka katta firse yaad aagaya.

Akshay is not our friend he came with Bhandi and he eager to know the history of the name of Bhandi. So choubey describe the story. Ones upon a time in college days our Bhandi went to Chinese corner (Tapas Chinese Corner) after eating so much he got to know that he don’t have money to pay the bill. So owner of the Chinese corner gave option to Bhandi either wash all my bhandi or I will give you in police. So Bhandi choose 1st option. And from that day we used to call him Bhandi. Now 95% of people known him as Bhandi they even don’t know his real name.

After dinner at 11.00 pm. we went to sleep. At morning we woke up at 07.00 am. There was a heavy rain from early morning. We woke up early so we decided go back to home via Tamhini Ghat and Mulshi Dam. The rain don’t want to stop so after breakfast at 10.00 am. We started our journey towards Tamhini Ghat in heavy rain. It is Sunday so too many people came to Devkund. It is heavy rainfall; we wonder how people will cross that crossings in this heavy water force.

Riding in heavy rain in ghats in quite dangerous. Tamhini Ghat is really awesome in monsoon, thousands of waterfalls on the way. Awesome place to visit in monsoon. It is better and safe option to Malshej Ghat. We took a root from Tamhini – Mulshi – Mumbai Pune Express Way – Lonavala – Mumbai. We stacked in traffic at Mulshi and Lonavala. And after full day ride we reached home at 10.00 pm.

Overall it was a great experience for Riding, Trekking and Camping in monsoon.

On Monday we saw news 50 to 55 college students stuck in Devkund because of heavy rain fall. After 5 to 6 hours local villagers and rescue team rescued them. So I suggest don’t go to such places without full information or ask for local guide.

I know this is not relate with this post but I can’t stop myself. Like mysterious name Bhandi, we have some more amazing names in our group. Like Chupya, Sontya, Doctor, Khaini, Patti, Adi bha, Jaadu, Baapat, Limbu, Odhani, Andu, etc. There is a small or long story behind every unique name.

About Devkund

The waterfall is located inside the forest near a small village called ‘Bhira’, near Bhira Dam. It’s one of the virgin places with crystal clear water. It’s confluence of three waterfalls and is said to be the origin of Kundalika river. It’s about 2 hours trek from base village along the dam backwater and through forest to reach this place known as ‘Devkund’. You could either choose to bask in the lush greenery or explore the waterfall with your friends.
