Karnala fort and bird sanctuary is 13 km from Panvel. You can reach Panvel by train or by road. Once you reach Panvel, you can take a shared auto from Panvel station to Karnala bird sanctuary for INR 50. The bird sanctuary has an entry fee of INR 50 per person.
The bird sanctuary with few birds is not the main attraction, and people mostly visit this place enjoy the scenic beauty while trekking to the fort. The best time to visit Karnala is during the monsoon season.
It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the fort from the bird sanctuary. There are a few points on the way where you can halt and enjoy the panoramic view of the lush green mountains. The trek is relatively easy except for a few rocky patches.
There a few food small hotels at the bottom of the hill near bird sanctuary. Make sure you carry enough water and food before you begin the trek as you won't find anything at the top. Also, wear good shoes as the route is slippery during the monsoon.
After completing the trek, you can again take a shared auto from bird sanctuary to Panvel station for INR 50.
