Very few knows that the inspiration for Bahubali's Mahishmati Samrajya came from modern day Maheshwar which was earlier known as Mahishmati. It is one of the offbeat destination near Indore, M.P. Recently, this place has been in couple of Bollywood movies (Padman, Ashoka, Kalank etc.) and TV shows (Kaal Bhairav) and this made it a popular weekend getaway from hustle bustle of Indore.
Believed to be built on the site of the ancient city of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya, Mahishmati was the capital of Shree Shastrarjun mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Modern day Maheshwar served as the capital for warrior queen Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar during 18th century.
Situated at approximately 3 hrs journey from Indore, this place is straight out of a story book. The main Palace is situated near Narmada Ghat. But the real deal is the fort complex and the huge Shiv Temple close to the Ghat. Ghat provides exquisite sunset views and one can only experience maheshwar in its full glory during a perfect sunset.
