Sanchi Stupa is depicted on the reverse side of the Indian currency note of Rs. 200/- to signify its importance to Indian cultural heritage. Sanchi is a Buddhist complex, famous for its Great Stupa, on a hilltop at Sanchi Town in Raisen district of M.P. Height of dome of the Great Stupa is 16.46 m and diameter is 36.6 m. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India and an important monument of Indian Architecture. It was originally commissioned by the Mauryan emperor Samrat Ashoka. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the 'chhatra', a parasol like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. Sanchi was the birthplace of Ashoka's wife as well as the venue of her and Ashoka's wedding. The oldest and the largest monument - this Great Stupa also called Stupa No. 1, initially built under the Mauryans. The stupa has four gates and the remains of the Ashoka Pillar, the carvings, writings on stones....there is a lot of history here. Sanchi Stupa is glorious site with remarkable architecture. Well maintained, clean and peaceful place. Early morning is the best to explore the area but if you visit in the evening you can attend the light and sound show which is a colourful and informative event. After exploring Sanchi Stupa we went to Sagar. reached at 4.30 PM. Checked in hotel Vandana at Sagar.
