Lucknow was our first stop on our trip through the heart of India. Our itinerary for Lucknow was full of places to eat. But we made sure to visit some of the remarkable places in the city.
The 'Rumi Darwaza' is standing tall since the 18th century, was initially built to mark the start of then Lucknow. As time passed, the city grew bigger. The Darwaza was no longer considered as the start point of the city. It was made into an entryway of the Nabab's palace. The palace does not exist anymore. It was destroyed by the British when the Nabab refused to surrender. But many monuments inside the palace still survived. So does the Rumi Darwaza.
Some say it was named after the famous Persian poet Rumi. But there is no enough historical evidence to prove it. Like Rumi and his poems, the Rumi Darwaza also stands the test of time. Now, it became the symbol of Lucknow.
As it is situated right in the center of today's old town, it is the best place to start your sightseeing too. Anything in the old town is either within walking distance or a short auto-rickshaw ride away.
Lucknow is full of such wonders. If you are planning to visit it anytime soon, read the detailed travel guide on Lucknow.
