Rajmachi Fort: A Historical and Architectural Marvel

Rajmachi Fort, also known as Fort Rajmachi, is a historical and architectural marvel that dates back to the 17th century. It was built by the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj as a strategic fortification to guard the trade route between the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan coast. The fort consists of two fortified peaks, namely Shrivardhan and Manaranjan, which are separated by a plateau.

The Lonavala route is the easier and shorter route to reach Rajmachi Fort. It is about 15 km long, and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. The route starts from the Lonavala railway station, and follows a well-marked dirt road that passes through the Tungarli Dam, the Valvand village, and the Udaysagar Lake, before reaching the fort. The route is mostly flat and downhill, and can be done by beginners and families. However, the route can be very crowded and dusty, especially during the weekends and holidays. The route is also not accessible during the monsoon season, as the road becomes muddy and slippery.

The route starts from the Kondivade village, near the Karjat railway station, and follows a steep and rocky trail that passes through the Kondhane Caves, the Rajmachi Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Udaysagar Lake, before reaching the fort. The route is mostly uphill and challenging, and can be done by experienced and adventurous trekkers. However, the route offers more scenic and serene views, and is less crowded and polluted. Rajmachi Fort Reviews

The name Rajmachi literally translates to Royal Fish in Hindi (not sure if that what it means in Marathi). So when I booked the trekking event to this hidden hamlet in the clouds in the Sahyadri Mountains, I least expected what was in store. I had been pondering over doing something different from bingeing on Netflix and Prime over the weekends when I came across the Facebook pages of the myriad trekking groups of Hyderabad. On an impulse I booked the Rajmachi event with Hyderabad Adventure and Trekking Club. The group assembled at the Nampally station and after the customary introductions, off we went towards Karjat (our base location) in the Hyderabad – Mumbai express. We encountered our first piece of adventure in Pune. When the train didn’t leave even after being stationed there for 30 minutes, we got to know the reason for the hold up. Due to incessant and heavy downpour in Mumbai and surrounding areas, the train was cancelled. The organizers were quick to act and booked us in a bus within an hour. After a quick round of the quintessential Marathi snack of Vada Pav and tea, we went hurtling towards our destination. We reached the base village at around 4pm and were instantly awestruck by the natural beauty of our surroundings. The lush green surroundings with numerous waterfalls lining the background, the gushing of the nearby stream and the magical element of rain transformed the location into a paradise on earth. Well, that was just the beginning and what lay ahead would just make this trip an experience to remember for a lifetime. After snacking on some steaming bowls of noodles, we started our first real test. All first time trekkers were geared up and ready to go with the experienced lot showing us the way. With our bags secured with covers and raincoats pulled on, we trudged along the beaten path encountering waterfalls, myriad varieties of flora, and many other groups of enthusiastic trekkers and not to forget the Royal Enfield group who kept roaring past us. With every turn, nature unmasked its multiple layers of beauty. At one point I lost count of the number of wow moments. Waterfalls, streams, crevices, fog and rain kept us engaged throughout. With the light fast fading, we tackled dirt, rocks, knee deep sludge and slime and the relentless rain to reach the hidden in the cloud hamlet of Rajmachi. Sore backs, aching feet and hurting shoulders welcomed us into the darkness of the no electricity village. Dinner was simple and filling – baakri (rice flour rotis), dal, veggies and rice. A round of cards followed before we all called it a night. The next morning brought in new surprises. At 4:30 am we were up and ready for trekking up to the fort. The enthusiasm was contagious and even after the back breaking trek of the previous evening every single soul in the group was raring to explore new heights. The darkness was shedding its shroud as daylight started to peep through the clouds. With dawn breaking in the horizon we started uphill, treading cautiously on the narrow path through the rocks while the clouds hovered all around us. Once at the peak we waited to get a view of the valley while the clouds played hide and seek. The moment the clouds cleared we all went up in a roar as nature presented us with yet another marvelous sight. Another round of photo shoot followed and we discovered hidden caves amongst the rocks. We trekked back to the village while the rain continued to shower its blessing on us. Post breakfast, consisting of poha, pickle and tea, we started our last leg of the trek. The descend was as eventful as the ascend as we continued to encounter sights to behold. Nature in all its glory guided us back to the base village while the incessant rain showed us how beautifully it combines with nature to present us, city dwellers a break away from the maddening chaos of the rat race.
Beautiful location with amazing Highway view but worst in condition.
Going through the hurdles, fixing the issues with the bikes, riding through the trek which was not even easy to be covered on foot, our group reached the Rajmachi Point. We parked our bikes near a pond, & the sight of a water body after a hard, rough ride is always a sign of gratification to one's desires of hedonism. We went for a quick dip in the pond to relax out the fatigue from the ride & I almost drowned slipping on the slimy rocks of the pond, that was terrifying & I was scared out of my wits. But let's leave that part behind & make a promise to learn how to swim ???? After a swim, refueling the enthusiasm, it was time to take a U-Turn & return back to Pune, but wait we had to 'track back our footsteps & follow the same route we took to reachRajmachi, & it is always easier to ride uphill than downhill on such extremely tough tracks. So the FUN wasn't over yet! The riders were ready to head back, syncing together, riding along enjoying the off-roading experience. The people trekking on-foot were admiring the bikers & it must've been a exciting sight to watch bullets off-roading in unison. Heading back to the Highway joining atLonavala, the riders were all in the mood of riding, when God showered his blessings in the form of rain. It was the rhythm of the rain & the thump of the bullet engines complimenting each other & the music lifting up the spirits of the riders. After enjoying the short rain shower, we headed towards Pune on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. The only stop left before the dispersion of riders on their way home was to have a group lunch. So we stopped at aDhabanamedSidhu Da Dhabaalong the highway. You can always eat a nicely cooked , perfect meal at an air conditioned restaurant, but to really dive-in & to have a glimpse of India's culture & customs, these roadside eateries are always a classic choice. So that was the point of dispersion, riders heading towards their destinations, the ride organizers were thanked for such an amazing ride & it was promised to continue the riding spirit in the future. I was not able to capture many junctures of the ride, due to the lack of cameras , but maybe some moments are just meant to be kept as memories in your heart, instead of being captured in pictures. Have you ever been on a thrilling off-roading experience? If yes, Do share it ????

We started from pune by 9:15 am with in between stops for picking medicines and chocolates n snacks and also petrol near waked and drove our two wheelers towards lonavala on state Highway. The road was near empty with no major vehicle passing through. We drove for good 1 hr 30 mins. And reached lonavala main market. We went on state Highway searching for a right turn. But couldn't trace it.. So went back and took the route shown in the map. There is no major signage put to reach this place and that's why we were struggling to reach. While driving we came across a lake just 15 mins drive from lonavala market.. We went ahead as we were late for trekking.. The road ended near one of resorts and ahead to us was only muddy uneven rubble roadslopping downwards.. We were not sure whether this was the route throughout and enquired with local people. They said the entire road is this way and down below after 20 mins it will become level but also I formed us about other route from khandala side. We had one pulsar and another aviator.. We were not sure whether aviator will be able to reach on such route.. We decided to head back.. She did some time near the lake and take lunch at lonavala main market and start from khandala side. We then reached the lake.. It was blue and clear water.. There were many trees forming an beautiful amalgamation of landscape..
