Ladakh has always been a favourite destination amongst travellers, and now, it is all set to add another feather to its cap with the establishment of its first-ever Night Sky Reserve. Spread over 1073 square kilometres, this reserve is located within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and promises to be a dream destination for stargazers.

The Night Sky Reserve is adjacent to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which houses the second-highest optical telescope in the world, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Hanle. The Reserve will promote eco-friendly astro tourism and reduce artificial light, benefiting wildlife conservation and scientific research.

Last year, the Ladakh UT Administration notified the proposed Dark Sky Reserve at Hanle village in Eastern Ladakh. This Dark Sky Reserve is among only 15 or 16 of its kind worldwide, offering a breathtaking view of the night sky almost throughout the year. Due to its altitude and location across the Himalayas in the rain shadow area, the Reserve is ideal for stargazers.

Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for Earth Sciences, recently shared his excitement about this project and said that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, would be requested to inaugurate the Reserve soon. Singh also discussed various issues related to the region, including developing food products from the Leh Berry, a nutritious fruit found in the area, to promote entrepreneurship and self-livelihood.

Besides being an ideal location for stargazing, Ladakh is also known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and adventurous experiences. Visitors can indulge in trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, and other outdoor activities. They can also explore ancient monasteries, visit traditional markets, and interact with the warm and hospitable locals.

In conclusion, the Night Sky Reserve in Ladakh is a project that promises to boost tourism while preserving the region's natural beauty and wildlife. It is a step towards sustainable tourism that will promote responsible travel, support local communities, and provide an unforgettable experience to visitors from around the world.
