I have always been fascinated by the tranquility of mountains and Gurudongmar lake is one of those destinations.
Gurudongmar lake at an elevation of about 17,800 ft is the second highest lake in India. A permit is needed to visit the place that can be issued in Gangtok.
We went there in the end of December and it was freezing cold.
Siliguri -> Gangtok
We took a bus to Gangtok from Siliguri bus stand. Shared Tata sumo and Bolero are also available. It took us about 5 hrs to reach Gangtok. As it was almost dark when we reached, we were not left with not many options, so we decided to just stroll around the MG marg.
Gangtok -> Chungthang -> Lachen
We woke up early and after having breakfast, we started our journey to the Lachen, a small scenic village in North Sikkim. The road was beautiful, the weather was perfect, a bright sunny day. You can see many waterfalls during this journey to the Lachen. We reached Lachen at around 7:00 pm. It was very cold.
Lachen -> Thangu -> Gurudongmar lake
We woke up early at 3:00 am in the morning because the journey had to be started as early as possible. We had our breakfast in a small shop in Thangu. We reached the lake at 8:00 am. The temperature was very low and the cold wind were blowing heavily. The journey was hectic, the weather was killing, inspite of all this , the magnificent view of the lake was worth all this pain. Carrying an oxygen cylinder would be advisable if anyone has issues related breathing.
