During my childhood days, I have always appreciated Kerala as “God’s own country” and a haven of pristine beauty for vacationers. Being an inquisitive kid, I constantly wanted to know why Kerala is given this one of a kind name. For what reason is it called “God's own country”? What is so exceptional about this spot to possess this title?
Being a student of Delhi University, I had the advantage of getting holidays in the span of every three-four month. It was the time for summer break and this gave me a chance to make use of the few holidays I had in hand. Wanting to make the most out of my vacation, without any further adieu I booked my trip for Kerala. Although it was not just me, it was a family trip. I visited the place with my parents.
We were very keen on exploring the jewels of Kerala, which are Munnar, Thekkady and Kumarakom. Each of the destinations was different from each other but equally fascinating.
On reaching Kerala, we checked-in to a hilltop hotel in Munnar. Located away from the hustle-bustle of the city, the place was perfect for spending some time in tranquillity. Beginning our stay in Munnar with Kathakali dance performance, we submerged ourselves into the culture of Kerala. Earlier in the evening, the showers of rain made the entire atmosphere more pleasant. So, we decided to relax at our hotel and had delicious South Indian cuisine.
Day 2 began with visiting verdant tea gardens and we got the opportunity of learning the entire process of tea-making. Undoubtedly, the tea gardens gave me some Chennai Express vibes. Enroute Munnar, we indulged in different activities like elephant ride, caught a glimpse of several waterfalls, and visited a spice garden and Eravikulam National Park. The day came to an end with clouds floating across the hills and we headed back to our hotel.
On the next morning, we checked out from our hotel in Munnar we started heading to Thekkady. We checked-in to another hotel and to get rid of all the stress we had a relaxing spa massage at our place of refuge. After this, we had lunch at a local restaurant wherein we had Kerala Parantha with Fried Fish. Late in the evening, we explored the local market, which was equally exciting.
For another day in Kerala, we headed to our next destination, Kumarakom. After reaching Kumarakom, we were welcomed at our houseboat with delicious lunch. Later on, we sailed around the backwaters of Kerala overlooking the small houses surrounded by coconut trees. In the evening, we hopped off the boat and reached Kovalam beach. The long expanse of the golden beach was relatively empty and clean. Sitting on the wet sand and watching the setting sun was truly a beautiful moment. Later on that night, we returned back to our houseboat for a night stay.
The next morning, we left for Kanyakumari to pay homage to Goddess Kanyakumari. There we witnessed the amalgamation of three ocean waters. And, when in South India how can we miss drinking coconut water. So, we purchased a coconut from a local vendor and sat alongside the ocean and enjoyed our fresh beverage with a mesmerising view.
Afterwards, we drove back to Kochi and returned back to Delhi.
As time passed, our family excursion to Kerala came to an end and I understood that calling this place “God's own country” is no overstatement. Regardless of the amount we saw different places, regardless of the amount we voyaged, Kerala still left us with wanting for more. The individuals were invited, the climate was pleasant, and none of the touring places at any point let us down.
