Touchdown Kuala Lumpur

Hit by a super cyclone and apparently living in a stone age, without internet, mobile network, it's the best time to pen down our honeymoon diaries in Kuala Lumpur.

We were less like honeymooners, more like travel freak couples. Spending our days in a five star hotel with fancy dinner dates and travelling in a pre booked car was not our plan. Rather, we loved to explore the whole city on a local transport, on our own terms.

After the wedding, we became acquainted with that we both had a common dream, to be on the observation deck of the iconic 451m tall PETRONAS Twin Towers(tallest building from 1998-2004) and get the view of Kuala Lumpur city. On that very moment, the destination was chosen.

Being in a totally different country, might be a bit difficult without local guides. But we had a smooth transition, thanks to Tripadvisor, Rome2rio and other travel blogs related to KL city.

KL has a lot to offer to the visitors, modern skylines, colonial architecture and myriad of natural attractions like limestone hills, tropical rain forests.

We started our journey on 19th of October 2019. We reached KLIA(KL International Airport), completed immigration and took our bus from airport arrivals terminal to KL city. It took approximately 45 minutes to reach the city. We booked our hotel from booking.com but wasn’t sure about the location. Once we reached, we became crazy to have our hotel in such a lively place. Our hotel, City Central was located in KL Sentral and surrounded by KL Sentral Station with MRT(Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT( Light Rail Transit), Monorail, Commuter Rail, NU Sentral Mall, KL Bus Terminal and lots of open air pubs everywhere. We fell in love with that place and it was like ‘love at first sight’.

On our first day, we visited the famous PETRONAS Twin Tower and AQUA KLCC. The moment we were in front of the Twin Tower, we were so mesmerized and couldn’t believe it was real. It took a bit of time for us to get back into reality. We went to the Sky Bridge and observation deck inside the tower. This Skybridge connects the two towers and is the highest two story bridge in the world. The Skybridge sits 170 meters off of the ground on the 41st floor of the towers. Next we went to the observation deck on the 86th floor. The city view from the observation deck was terrific. These twin towers look stunning especially at night when the towers are lit with hundreds of lights and the water fountain.

Next we visited AQUA KLCC, located beneath Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is a state-of-art aquarium. This is one of the largest aquariums in SouthEast Asia. There’s a 90 meter underwater tunnel with a moving travelator where Tiger sharks, stingrays, marine turtles and other sea creatures swimming around unhindered in that vast aquarium over our head. In short, our first day went off well in KL.

We headed towards Batu caves on our second day and were able to get the view of KL’s natural beauty. Batu caves is a limestone hill which has a series of caves along with Lord Murugan Temple. To reach this place we had to climb 272 steep steps. One of the most important features of this cave is the tallest statue of Lord Murugan. This is one of the famous Hindu Temples outside India.

Trying KL street food was no exception in this trip as well and Petaling street (china town of KL) is best for that.

Variety of street foods, mainly deep fried items are available there including seafood platter (shrimp, squid, octopus, crab, lobster), sausages and plenty of chilled beers. We also had Malaysia’s national dish Nasi Lemak, a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf.

Next day, we were off to Genting Highlands, a cool hill station set amidst cool mountain air and rain forest. It offers indoor and outdoor theme parks, casinos etc. We took a bus from KL Sentral to Awana Skyway and cable car from there to the peak of Genting hills. The cable car ride was perfect for the adventures enthusiasts.
