I have always found myself scribbling over diaries, notebooks and even my school text books since I can remember. These were notes to myself, secret conversations with imaginary characters and even letters to my favourite fictional characters. Point is, I always wanted to write.
As I grew older, I started finding a different kind of inspiration. I wanted to write about my thoughts after visiting a place, I started imagining scenes from historic buildings and iconic eateries and found stories to tell myself.
Kolkata, the city of joy is full of such stories, and there are some spots in this iconic city that is seeped in so much history that is bound to inspire people - especially those budding storytellers, like me.
Indian Museum

Don't go here for the museum artefacts but for the building itself. Found in 1814, this was first in the country and walking into this structure will make you realise how important it was and is. Spend a lazy afternoon here on a not so hot day, and carry a notebook to pen down some thoughts. Whether it is from chatter of other visitors around you or from those old pillars, it is bound to evoke a few thoughts.
Shakespeare Society of Eastern India
Shakespeare Sarani is a street and one might think there is more for writers here, but there isn't. But the Shakespeare Society of Eastern India is a good place to visit as they often have workshops, events and you are bound to run into like minded people.
Indian Coffee House, College Street
I believe this 'cafe' is the OG - when it comes to being a place that harboured writers over generations. And more importantly the Indian Coffee House is in College Street in Kolkata - which is full of books. It is a bookworm and a writer's paradise -specially those who have a knack for street shopping. It has been a known 'adda' or 'hangout' for some of the most intellectual crowd including those from Presidency College, its neighbour. Back in 'the day' it became famous for the poets, artists, filmmakers and writers who came here for discussions and debate. I LOVE the vibe there. Have you been?
Did you know that Kolkata is home to India's largest second-hand book market?
Oxford Book store

This is the one of the many places on my Kolkata wishlist that I am yet to set foot inside. The Oxford Bookstore was a landmark in 'Calcutta' during the British Raj, and remains one even in today's Kolkata. Bookstores always inspire bibliophiles, writers and wannabe writers like me, after all, isn't part of the dream to see your own book one day too?
Writers Building

While the name suggests otherwise, the 'Writers' Building has nothing to do with writers or literature. Infact, it has always been an official building. But why I include it in this list, that despite it housing clerks, admin and government officials - the building itself is beautiful. It's been the site for many important historic events including many during our freedom struggle, so I always felt that if buildings could narrate stories, this would have many to tell.
