Behold!

Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) has acquired the house of renowned artist Jamini Roy with a visionary plan to transform it into India's first private single-artist museum and cultural resource centre.

The three-story residence will undergo renovation with the help of restoration architects and designers to breathe new life into the artist's legacy. DAG's CEO and Managing Director Ashish Anand expressed his excitement, calling this project the most important undertaken by the gallery in its three-decade history.

Art historian Tapati Guha Thakurta shared her thoughts on the lack of tradition in India for turning artists' homes into museums, making this initiative all the more significant.

Jamini Roy's former home in Ballygunge Place, Kolkata, is where he lived and created art until his passing in 1972. The Government of India recognized him as a National Treasure Artist, four years after he passed away. His great-granddaughter, Arkamitra Roy, expressed her joy at DAG's decision to share her great-grandfather's legacy and art with the people of Bengal and art enthusiasts worldwide.

The museum will span over 7,284.17 sqft across three floors, equipped with state-of-the-art galleries to house permanent and rotating exhibitions, a resource centre, a library, art workshops, event spaces, and even a museum shop and café for visitors to enjoy.

DAG is proud to have one of the most comprehensive collections of Jamini Roy's works, which it will further consolidate with the museum in mind. DAG will hold an exhibition in Mumbai on April 2nd, titled 'Living Traditions & the Art of Jamini Roy,' to offer a glimpse of what the Jamini Roy House Artist Museum in Kolkata will offer.
