Tagged as the "Venice of the East" or "God's own country", Kerala, a place with lush landscapes, delicious cuisine, serene surroundings and rich spirituality. I visited Kerala during the monsoons. Though people avoid going to different places during monsoon, I instead chose to try it. There are some advantages though. Onam, the biggest festival of Kerala is celebrated during the monsoons added with the discount availed in train journey and the entire stay in Kerala. Backwater boat ride is really fun during the monsoons. It is also the prime time for ayurveda and it embraces you even more due to it's lush surrounding, spices and fruits. If you are not a monsoon person, then the idea of visiting Kerala during monsoon is bad. But it was fun for a person like me.
Marine Drive is also known as the Shanmugham Road. It is one of the best tourist place to visit in Kerala. At night the lights from various ships focused at the harbor is breathtaking. The view of backwater is enjoyable and fun. The place is always crowded with tourists.
Chinese fishing net is the place where you get to encounter various fishermen along with their nets. They have a unique style of catching fishes and they say that it's the chinese style if catching fishes, hence the name. They explain you how it is operated by charging few penny. During afternoon, one can head to the waterfront where the nets are lined in the shore and enjoy the seafood. Various stalls for food, toys, balloons, events happening are found there.
Thekkady is the best place to observe wildlife. It is one of the dream destination for me. This place has all kinds of animals including deer, boar, lion, giraffe and other places to visit here are Spice garden where you have all the ayurveda medicine found. The Periyar lake is bliss along with the tea garden which is so huge . One can spend 1-2 days enjoying the view and beauty of Thekkady.
Kottayam is another heavenly place of Kerala where you can visit the Ernakulam town for shopping. Cheriyapally and ettumanoor are must visit places in Kottayam. Even the feeling of staying in a hotel in Kottayam is very peaceful. Such is the feeling encountered when I had visited the place.
Munnar is known for it's tea plantation. If you thought that Darjeeling is the hub for tea plantation in India, hold on you have a tough competition here. Packed with a tea museum and an interesting way of the tea being picked and processed, this is a fun place to be in. Enjoy the smell and the fresh tea coming straight from the garden.
Synagogue is a place which attracts tourists due to it's impressive furnishing. Not everybody enjoys this but if you fall in the niche category, do visit. With it's impressive furnishing and beautiful structure and splendid chinese tiles and belgian chandellors used to decorate it, it's really beautiful.
Kochi is known as the gateway of Kerala. With it's amazing architectural and historical beauty this place will hypnotize you. The Kochi Fort is one such magnificent structure.
This is the capital of Kerala. Also known as the "Evergreen city of India", it has various places one can visit to. I went to places like Priyadarshini Planetarium, Kuthiramalika, Kanakakunnu Palace and Vizhinjam Rock cut temple. My stay here was only for a day.
The Kathakali performance, a dance-drama which is very traditional to Kerala, is one of the most cherished memories of all the tourists if they watch a performance live. The look of the dancers with red bloodshot eye, border on grotesque along with the movements of dance which are very subtle. They tell a meaningful story based on the mythology depicting the various form of non verbal communication.
