Wayanad is the 12th district in the Kerala state. In the east, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush, forested region with areas of high altitude, home to animals including Asiatic elephants, tigers, leopards and egrets. In the Ambukuthi Hills to the south, Edakkal Caves contain ancient petroglyphs, some dating back to the Neolithic age. Episode 1 is all about Thamarassery pass (Thamarassery Churam, aka Wayanad Churam) and nearby tourist attractions. Thamarassery Pass is part of NH 766, which connects Kozhikode and Kollegal in Karnataka. To reach the top, 9 hairpin bends have to be climbed through this 14KM pass from the foothills near Thamarassery in Kozhikode district to Lakkidi in Wayanad. Part of the Western Ghats, these hills are rich in flora and fauna.

Tourists coming up the pass are greeted by the nearby Thusharagiri waterfalls. Thusharagiri Waterfalls can be reached by travelling 5 km to the right from the Chippilithode Junction in the Pass. Thusharagiri waterfalls ls is located in Kodancherry Panchayath in Kozhikode district. Thusharagiri literally means 'snow-capped mountains'. The two streams that originate from the Western Ghats converge here and forms 3 waterfalls, Erattumukku, Mazhavil Chattam and Thumpithullum Chattam.

Thusharagiri waterfalls is also a popular destination for trekkers. You can reach the source of this spring by trekking 5 KM through the forest. If you are lucky, you can see elephants and other wildlife from this trekking route. That is why many nature lovers and bird watchers come here. There is also a trekking route from Thusharagiri to Vaithiri in Wayanad. The trekking route passes through an evergreen forest full of wildlife.

Another attraction of Thusharagiri is the Arch Bridge across the river. It is also the tallest arch bridge in Kerala. The Malabar River Festival is held here every July. Many competitions like kayaking and river rafting are held here as part of the festival. The festival is organized by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). People from more than 15 countries compete in kayaking here. The Malabar River Festival has been selected as one of the top 5 white water kayak festivals in the world. Unlike the cold water kayaks in the northern states of India, the light kayaks here are very suitable for the competitors. Likewise, the rushing waters of the river and the small ditches in between attract white water kayakers.
