On my 11 days trip to Kerala, Varkala was in my must-go beach list. Varkala is a small coastal town in South India in the state of Kerala. Less famous among Indian travellers as the common choice is Kovalam Beach, it has breathtakingly beautiful beach where one can experience the scenic vision of a mighty cliff facing the calm and beautiful Arabian sea.
I have explored both the sides of this place, Peaceful and full of life. No matter what kind of person you're or what kind of mood you're in for, Varkala have it all.
We have stayed at newly opened zostel which is approx. 2 min walking distance from beach and approx. 5-7 min walking distance from cliff. Famous among bag packers, this place is full of colors & art & DIYs from travellers like you and me.
Next is "Things to do in Varkala". From my experience, just do NOTHING ! And you realize it the moment you get there. Just sit/walk around on beach and cliff, soak up some sun, have amazing food specially sea food, go for swim, do some yoga on beach with the groups, grab a drink and just be !
My routine for both days was wake up to amazing view from zostel. Do the morning yoga at the beach. Go to cliff and have yummy breakfast ! They have amazingly fresh and healthy options for that !!
From noon till evening, chill at beach. Shop from amazing Tibetan shops around. Grab a drink and watch sun setting with beautiful colors in sky and how it looks different every few minutes !
Late evenings and nights are absolute delight too. Tiny cafes serving amazing dishes, bunch of local musicians playing great music and lot of laughter and dancing the heart out!! Warm welcome from local people, their stories about travellers they meet everyday and you share an unforgettable bond with them over couple of drinks and of course your best dance moves. Fairy lights & happiness everywhere !!
Repeat the same on next days ! Cliff have amazing cafes lined up overlooking the sea with variety of cuisines. Meet some new people on the way and say "hi.." to those familiar faces that feels home now :) At last my favourite spot to soak in some sun in day, and sit quietly listening to sound of water sipping wine at night !!
Varkala is a tiny magical town. Everything you do here, be it sitting alone by the beach, taking walk till helipad, eating authentic sea food, experiencing famous kerala massage, you will find something to cherish in all those moments. Be it solo or couple or bunch of friends trip, this place surely makes a place in your heart and life long memories to cherish. Perfectly safe for women and freedom of doing what your heart feels. No creepy eyes or comments on your clothes or anything. This town is surely a hidden gem of kerala.
