The very beautiful Munroe island is located in the Kollam district of Kerala. It is situated at the congenction of Ashtamudi lake and Kallada lake. Narrow channels, abundance of flora and canoe ride is only to name a few which make this place a perfect weekend get-away from Kochin/Trivandrum.
The lake water is slightly saline due to its proximity to the oceans. Ever since the tsunami struck, the island is under threat of submerging. The island is now uninhibited and this scenic beauty might soon be a memory.
We started our ride from Varkala Cliff by 6.30 in the morning. It was slightly drizzling which made our ride a little slower. Munroe island is 50 kms away from Varkala. We took the Paripally - Kundara route. The alternate route, Edava - Kappil theeradesham road presents pleasant views of sea even though the roadways can be upsetting.
We reached the Vallakadavu at Munroe by 8 AM where we had already booked a boat. Variety of boating options are available once you reach Vallakadavu. We took an open row boat and headed off to explore Munroe. The canoe was large enough to accommodate 6 people comfortably. The boat moved through the sides of the vast lake. A few craftsmen were busy at work with a new boat.
We soon reached a small canal. Either side of the canals had inhabitants. Our helmsman dropped a few facts about the island as we go. The morning was so peaceful and the canals presented so many picturesque views.
There were remains of the walkway which once lead to the island. The birds were warming their wings after the morning hunt. The air was becoming hotter by minute. We stopped for a while near to the Mangroves for shade. The mangroves have been grown there to preserve he island from submerging because of Tsunamis. We could spot fishes swimming near the roots of Mangrove. Many large fishes come and lay their eggs near to the mangroves for protection. Numerous small islands can be spotted from there.
We reached back by 12 after a blissful journey. The journey cost us Rs.1000 and its worth every rupee. They can arrange seafood lunch if booked in advance. You can enjoy farm fresh fish specialties. Early mornings are the best time to visit because afterwards the heat really spoils the mood. If you can reach by sunrise then it would be the best time. Many home stays and resorts are now live in Munroe which includes a Club Mahindra resort also.
