Kumarakom : One visit is just not enough !!

If you are a traveller and love exploring new places then a trip to Kerala will definitely be on your minds . So when we sat to plan a trip for October 2nd long weekend , Kerala came out as the unanimous choice for our family . We wanted to plan a short quick getaway for three days . So we picked Kumarakom.

We booked flight from Mumbai to Cochin . Kumarakom is further 3.5 hour drive away from the Cochin airport . We took an early morning flight from Mumbai and landed at Cochin before 10 am . Then we booked a pre paid taxi from airport counter and started our journey to Kumarakom. The journey was beautiful. Kerala looked soaked in beauty and green with the effect of recent monsoon. We halted at one of the roadside to savour the sweet coconut water. The taste of coconut water confirmed that we are indeed in God’s Own Country.

Around 1.30 pm we arrived at our resort “ Eastend Lakesong “ . Featuring traditional Kerala architecture and décor, the 4-star Lakesong Resort sits next to Vembanadu Lake in Kumarakom. The one unique feature of the resort was the small canal right inside the property. The resort offered complimentary fishing and kayaking in that canal. White swans were swimming. The property was lush green, adorned by coconut trees on all the side. We enjoyed a traditional Kerala meal on banana leaves. We then explored the property magnificent property > it was no doubt a superb accommodation. In evening we enjoyed every bit of the complimentary boat ride arranged by the resort in the adjoining Vembanadu Lake. Watching the sunset from our private boat and sipping masala tea became the highlight of the day.

We got up quite early next morning as we did not wanted to miss the sunrise and the calm of the morning. We thoroughly enjoyed the extensive south Indian breakfast. Post that we indulged in the Kerala Spa which is now a trademark and a world famous service from the land of Gods.

No trip to Kumarakom can be flagged as successful unless you take a Backwaters Cruise. We booked a ride in a small private houseboat for 4 hours starting at 4 pm. Hotel packed us a nice picnic basket to enjoy on the houseboat. The backwaters in Kumarakom have gained much fame over the years for their serenity and beauty. And so of all the things to do, the Kumarakom backwater cruise is considered to be a must-do! . We spent around 3 hours cruising through the mangroves and exploring other beautiful sites .The boat was well maintained and our guide tried his best to explain things. We decided on the short tour as this was just about right to return back to resort before it’s too dark. Seeing our love for photography, the guide parked the boat next o one of the rice paddies and we enter into the lush green paddy farm to click some pictures. The silence of the backwaters and the beautiful landscapes were enchanting beyond works. We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who visits Kumarakom. We ended the day on a happy note enjoying the lavish dinner buffet a resort.

Next day was the last day at Kerala as we had our flight back from Cochin at around 7 pm. We checked out of the hotel post our breakfast and decided to do a half day city tour of Cochin before boarding the plane for Mumbai . We visited the Folklore Museum, St Francis Church, and Veeranpuzha Beach (and the famous Fishing net!). Since Fort Kochi is the most visited and famous area of Cochin we decided to have our lunch at some nice place there. We picked Kashi Art Cafe as our lunch venue. A one of its kind cafe lined with unique artefacts with and organic food menu was the perfect choice for the day . Post lunch we spent some time in the market shopping for famous spices and Kerala cotton and headed for airport

It was indeed the best utilisation of a long weekend.
