Just In: Kochi Becomes First Indian City to Commence Water Metro Service

Kochi is set to become the first city in the country, and in South Asia to have a Water Metro Service. Ten island communities of Kochi will be connected to the mainland through this water metro. The project will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, April 25. This project is expected to boost tourism while keeping travel affordable for the local people of Kochi. The prices range from Rs. 20 to Rs. 40 a ticket depending on the route.

Kochi Water Metro will also have quarterly, monthly, and weekly passes for local commuters. As an inaugural offer, the passes will be sold at a discounted price. If one wants to skip waiting in line, tickets can also be booked through a Mobile QR on the Kochi One App. The first two terminals that will be operations for the Water Metro Service will be High Court - Vypin and Vyttila - Kakkanad.

The services will start with eight electric hybrid boats and the service timings are 7 AM to 8 PM. Kochi Metro Rail Limited is in charge or ensuring the smooth operations of the Service. Eventually, the Water Metro is expected to connect Willington, Kumbalam, Vypin, Edakochi, Nettoor, Vyttila, Eloor, Kakkanad and Mulavukad Islands.
