Art in town - Kochi Muziris Biennale

Woodcut prints by Dennis Muraguri - a Kenyan artist, depicting the matatus - privately owned buses that serve as the primary mode of transportation for the people in Kenya. The buses are mass-produced, but each matatu is modified to be made special and unique; re-painted and fitted with music to attract and amuse the passengers. Hence it is representation of the culture where common is tailored to stand out as one of a kind.

From Kenya back to India, once again the humble bus takes the centre stage in the exhibit called Oorali Express, the name of a local musical band. The title is the name of their bus that has been modified as a tour vehicle and a performance stage. A contemporary band performing an amalgamation of acts such as music, theatre, art and conversations with their audiences; their songs speak about the current realities of the world. And they are available for bookings !

And where is this exhibition ? At the only biennale being held in the country; at Kochi, Kerala. There was an initial concern whether we will have the exhibition this year because of the unprecedented havoc caused by flooding in Kerala in Aug 18; but it's on in full swing at Kochi.

Our guide was a lady named Karisma from Manipur, a state in north-east India. The main venue is as always the beautiful and historic Aspinwall House at Fort Kochi.

The artist Chandan Gomes from New Delhi, India has some interesting exhibits - everyday, uncanny were the last two adjectives on his written portrait.

His photographs like the one below - are intended to trigger memories and feelings as opposed to the view that photos record memories.

The Pepper House, another historical building nearby is a venue.

And here we have exhibit by Vivian Caccuri providing a narrative on mosquitoes with light and sound effects; we blame them for so many ills, maybe all was not their fault !?
