Situated in North Karanataka, Yana is a small village that boasts of being home to a humongous limestone rock formation called Mohini Shikhara. I had the opportunity of exploring this wonder myself and I'm here to tell you the fascinating story behind it!

The rock has a super interesting story attached to it!

As legend has it, the demon, Bhasmasura earned the boon from Lord Shiva that would potentially make him invincible. Bhasmasure could turn anyone into ash at the touch of his hand. When the demon tried to touch the forehead of Lord Shiva himself, Lord Vishnu was compelled to intervene.

Lord Vishnu appears to Bhasmasura in the form of an enchantress, Mohini, who foes on to charm him to the extent that the demon proposes to her. Mohini agrees to the marriage, but only on one condition – the demon would have to match her steps as she dances. The demon immediately agrees, and gets so engrossed in the dance that he forgets all about his boon. Mohini touches her head and Bhasmasura automatically mirrors her steps. As soon as he touches his own head, an explosion takes place, one that is so strong and so powerful that the ashes of Bhasmasura turn into a huge rock, which is today known as the Mohini Shikhara.

There is a small water stream to the right en route. Don't forget to have a look at it.

The sheer size and magnanimity of Mohini Shikhara was so mesmerising, it was as if I was transported into the past when there were no sky-scrapers, only nature blossomed abound.
