Day 1

The typical weekend gateway from Mysore and Bangalore, a little town in southern Karnataka famous for serene locations, coffee hills and varied wild life. Coorg, known as Scotland of India, is all in one place for people who love nature. It has wildlife sanctuaries, trekking, temples and monasteries.

We started from Mysore in the morning on bike and in the half way, the hill road started. First we went to the Namdroling Monastery which is on the way to the town Madikeri. It is the largest teaching centre of Nyingmapa, a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and houses over five thousand monks and nuns. There is a golden temple, where 40 ft Buddha statues were major attractions. We went there in the afternoon they are continuing their prayers in the hall. From there, we reached to our hotel room had dinner outside and walked over the town in Madikeri. The little showers on the way to the madikeri made our journey beautiful.

Early in the morning, we started to to Mandalapatti peak, where you can capture the western ghats and this place is worth visiting. You have to trek/reach through Jeep to reach the top of the hill. When we reached the peak, It is just beyond our expectations with heavy winds and our heads in clouds. We enjoyed the weather there for half an hour and we returned to the Abbey falls.

Located in the Madikeri town, Omkareshwara temple is must visit place. It is said that the Shiva’s temple was constructed by King Lingaraja II, in 19th century, to appease the soul of a Brahmin, whom he killed for political reasons. It not only attracts the devotees but everyone with it’s blend of Gothic and Islamic architecture. The shivalinga is brought from the holy place Kashi (the particular Shiva linga is known as Omkareshwara) and installed in the newly constructed temple.

Day 3

The birth place of kavery river (talakaveri) located in Bhrahmagiri hills is 40 km away from Madikeri. We never felt the distance as the journey was beautiful with hilly roads with small waterfalls here and there and full of greenery. One can enjoy the best of this in the monsoon season when the hills were shrouded with mist. There is temple which dedicated to goddess kaveriamma. A spring, which feeds the tank believed to be the origin of the river and considered holy by many devotees. You will be greeted with the mesmerizing bird eye view of the evergreen forest land and coorg hills from the hill top but you have to take more than 400 steps to reach the view point.

With the heavy rains in the season, the river is flowing at dangerous levels and they couldn’t allow us to cross the river to reach the elephant camp. So, we decided to go for the river rafting. As we were ready and steady we have gone with the river as a group with some drills and jokes. You will enjoy the view when the river is steady and calm. When it is the time for rapids, a heart in mouth moment, you have to paddle continuously till the end of the rapid as explained in the drill. In between you are allowed to get into the water with a rope support and swim if you can or float on water if you cannot as there is a compulsory life jacket. Take the ride with more rapids it will be worth experiencing once.
