The town is situated in Karnataka, close to Mysore and is a place where life can be described in two words- peace and party. Coorg is a hill town and completely a touristy place. The place has a pleasant atmosphere throughout the year and it can be visited even during monsoons. The rains make this town even more beautiful. People here enjoy life every day at a time and seem to be very happy and content.

Apart from the views, Coorg is famous for its weather, wildlife and coffee. It is called the Scotland of India. Let us see how you can get there and what are the things you can do here.

How to reach Coorg?

By Flight: The closest airport is Kannur International Airport at Kannur, Kerala which is about 60 km away from Coorg. The other airport is Mangalore International Airport at Mangalore, Karnataka which is 116km away from Coorg.

By Train: The closest railway station is at Mysore (95 km) in Karnataka and Thalassery & Kannur (79 km) in Kerala.

By Road: You can take a cab or use the public bus transport to reach Coorg from most of the cities. It takes a 3.5 hour journey from Hassan.

Things to do at Coorg:

Abbi Falls:

Waterfalls are calming to both the ears and the eyes. The sight of waterfalls is always a beautiful one. The sound of the water gushing down the rocks has always been a therapy to the mind. The water From the Abbi Falls joins the river Cauvery. Near the falls, there is a Kali Mata Temple that would be lovely to visit as well.

Madikeri :

This is a hill station in the same district and is called the Kashmir of south India. It has a scenic view and a romantic weather. There is a Fort at madikeri called the Madikeri Fort. It was originally built by Mudduraja and rebuilt by Tipu Sultan. This fort sure warrants a visit. There is a museum near the fort that displays artefacts from the British reign and a few of Tipu Sultan’s possessions too. If you are a history lover, you must go to this fort at Madikeri.

Omkareshwara temple:

This is a Shivan temple and is famous for its architecture and the Shivalinga. The Shivalinga that is present in this temple was brought from Kashi. The architecture of the temple is Indo-Islamic. The temple has a central dome with four minarets on the sides making it resemble a Muslim Dargah. All these facts about this temple make you want to visit and witness the beauty.

Bylakuppe:

Coorg is also known for the Tibetan settlement too. The Namdroling monastery is very popular. The monastery is beautiful and you get traditional handicrafts there. You should not miss out on the Tibetan momos there. They are the best. You can interact with the Monks there to know more about their tradition.

Nisargdhama:

This is an island that is full of wildlife. It has bamboo, sandalwood and teak trees that are a home to animals like deer peacocks and rabbits. To reach the island you need to cross a hanging bridge. You can take boat rides in the Cauvery River too. It would be a paradise for the wildlife photographers. You can trek into these forests as well. This little island is beautiful and you won’t regret being here.

Talakaveri Wildlife sanctuary:

This sanctuary lays at the origin of the Cauvery River, hence its name, from the South Indian derivative. This is an ideal trekking spot. Animals like tigers, jackals, leopards, elephants, cobras, pythons are seen here. Trekking in this area would be a thrill. For visiting and trekking in this sanctuary, the perfect time to visit would be between November and April.

Tadiandamol Peak:

This is the highest peak in Coorg. It is at a height of 5724 feet above sea level. The route to this peak is another place for trekking. The trek will be a long one but the scene and peace at the top is worth all the efforts. The Padi Igguthappa Temple, one of the holiest temples of the natives is present a few kilometres from the peak. This entire route is a trekker’s delight for sure.

Puthari Festival:

This is the harvest festival that is celebrated around December. Puthari means ‘new rice’. This festival is celebrated with a lot of music and dance. If you are a person who wants to witness and enjoy the local tradition of Coorg and participate in their way of celebration, you must plan your visit to Coorg during December.

Food:

The people of Coorg are pure non vegetarians. They eat meat which is cooked with a lot of coconut and spices. To mention some popular dishes, they are Kadubu, Pandi curry, Biamble and Atti Payasa.

The coffee plantations are very famous in Coorg. The places smells of coffee everywhere. Once you are in Coorg, even if you are a coffee lover or not, you must have a cup here.
