The sound of the waves
The smell of the waters
The sky in various hues as the sun goes down
The sand beneath your bare feet as you walk along the shores dreaming and wishing
The intermittent blanket of waves covering your feet as you stroll further into tranquility is priceless.
Beaches are my go-to place whenever I'm engulfed with emotions of any kind, be it happiness or sadness. I'm lucky to have Mangalore as my hometown, which is loved for its beaches.
Someone rightly said, "Nothing soothes the soul like a walk on the beach."
Nestled between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, this small town in Karnataka is a budding tourist spot. Being a coastal city, it has a varied number of beaches to explore-popular ones being the Panambur, Tannirbhavi, NITK, Someshwar & Sashithlu Beach.
Panambur beach hosts Jet Ski rides, water sports & also has camel & horse rides and kite flying. It is well known for the International Kite festival it organises.
Tannirbhavi beach is another tranquil beach to enjoy the sunset & relish on the chaats available here overlooking the sea. This beach is my go-to weekend spot as it is the nearest to the city. You can either take a drive or a boat across the river from Sultan Battery watchtower to reach here.
Someshwar beach is generally visited by people going to the Lord Shiva Temple nearby. This beach has many rock formations, and hence it is not advisable for swimming & playing in the waters along the shore. Nevertheless, you can sit on one of the rocks and enjoy the waves hitting it and splashing showers on you.
The Surathkal beach is also known as NITK Beach, as it is in proximity to the National Insititute of Technology, Karnataka. The general public can also access this private beach of the College. There is also a lighthouse nearby. However, there are no food stalls and other amenities available on this beach. Yet it attracts a good number of crowds for its scenic view.
Sashithlu beach is my favourite one. Located in the outskirts of Mangalore, here you get to see the convergence of the river into the sea, and the view is spectacular. This offbeat spot has attracted a lot of tourists after it started to host surfing events from 2016.
Mangaloreans love the beaches & hence it is generally crowded during the weekends. The beaches here are well maintained & clean. You also have a choice of staying over in beach resorts like the Red Rock Residency & Summer Sands Resorts and enjoy private time with your family and friends.
Mangalore is slowly budding to be known for its pristine beaches. It has a prospect to be a tourist spot in the likes of goa, Gokarna and Pondicherry. It also houses the seventh-largest port in the country and is connected by all four modes of transport.
Apart from the beaches, the other tourist interests would be the Mangaladevi Temple, Kadri Manjunath Temple, St Aloysius Chapel, Sultan Battery Watchtower.
Come and experience its beaches, culture and historical splendour. And also savour in the soul food it has to offer like The Mangalorean style fish curry, chicken sukka, Mangalore buns and the world-famous Ideal ice cream, to name a few.
So all the rovers out there, once this COVID lockdown is the thing of the past, do keep this beautiful town in your wish list and I promise it will leave you awestruck. Until then Stay home, Stay Safe and never lose hope :)
