For a weekend break, we (me and my husband) packed our bags to visit “The Scotland of south," Coorg. We boarded the flight from Pune to Bangalore airport on Friday morning and reached in an hour. Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport is nearly about 45 kms from the Majestic Bus stop, where the buses travel frequently to Madikeri and Mysore. Vajra Vayu, the nonstop AC Volvo drops you directly to the destination from airport. From, there you can take a local bus or auto to Satellite Bus stop, from where Ac buses ply to Mysore and Coorg. So we boarded Airavat AC Volvo which directly dropped us at Madikeri bus stop. We hired an auto to drop us at the hotel “Hill View.”
The hotel receptionist was quite amicable and guided us to the room. Because of hectic and long journey, we reclined and relaxed in the hotel room. The room was very comfortable with all modern facilities. The staff members were kind and helped us for everything we required. All we needed was a bike on rent for covering Coorg completely as the hot-spots were scattered all over the district of Kodagu. So, we got the bike from the hotel receptionist on sincere request.
Day 1:
Omkareshwara Temple: After having breakfast, we visited Omkareshwara temple, situated 3 kms from Madikeri bus stop. The temple dates back to 1820 and was built by Lingarajendra II. A pool with fresh water and swamps of fish is a major attraction. You can reach the temple by an auto for very minimal fare if there is no facility of bike.
Abbey Falls: Situated 10 kms from Madikeri, this place has a lot to offer to the tourist who love biking and admire scenic beauty. The waterfall cascade downs to flow to a small river. The cardamom and coffee plantation on the way to Abbey falls will certainly captivate you. The swirling and twisting roads made the journey an enthralling experience. You have to walk 500 meters after parking your vehicle to reach the spot. A hanging bridge offers a better view of the waterfall. There is nothing much to do. All you can do is click some photos and be in awe of the splendid panoramic view
Chelevara Falls: Situated 40 kms from Madikeri, via Virajpet, this place is quite secluded. But, it is the most beautiful waterfalls in Coorg. There is no proper road to reach the bottom of the falls. All you need is to hold your patience .Most of the people take bath in the water falls and swim inside. Chomakund is just 2 kms ahead of the water falls which is covered with fog most of the times and offers you a glance of Arabian Sea.
Day 2:
After breakfast at Neel Sagar, which serves sumptuous South Indian breakfast we headed for one more adventurous day.
Dubare Elephant Camp: Located 30 kms from Madikeri, you can take a route via Kushal Nagar or a shortcut which is less crowded. While travelling across the dense forest, narrow crisscrossed roads, you need to hold your nerves. But, the road is in very good condition and you will certainly enjoy the ride. Also, do not forget to switch on the GPRS. This is a great place but overcrowding. You can take bath in the Kaveri River. Various activities like water rafting (100 /person) will keep you engaged and take you to the other side of the river for elephant rides. Also, if you are lucky enough, photographers can shoot some exotic birds like wood peckers, kingfishers and many more.
Tibetan Monastery (Golden Temple): After Dubare, we visited Tibetan Monastery situated at Bylapkuppe, an enroute to Kushal nagar. The Buddhist Monastery is brilliant with the traditional art and you should never miss the mouth watery Tibetan Food. Many souvenir shops with laughing Buddha, crockery, wind chimes and hanging masks will catch your attention.
Raja Seat: While returning from Tibetan Monastery, we stopped at a few stops to buy homemade chocolates, coffee and spices. By the time, we reached Raja Seat it was already 6 pm and sun was pouring down. There is a beautiful garden where school children, couples and visitors come and enjoy the sunset, Musical fountain is a major attraction which starts after a few minutes of sunset.
