Sunday and Breakfast go hand in hand! While you look online for South Indian breakfast places in Bangalore, CTR and Vidyarthi Bhavan top the list.
But Bangalore has a number of other amazing, though lesser known places with finger licking breakfast options spread across the city - a mix of iconic eateries and new age dining. If you are looking to explore the charm of Bangalore, look no further!
1. Namma SLN - Teachers Colony Circle, Basavangudi
This is my top choice; hands down! Their specialty is the Sabbakki Dosa and Idli which is a sabudana dosa with sabbakki (or Dill leaf). The place opens around 7:30am but gets quite crowded by 8am itself. This is a fast-food kind of place, which is small, so you grab you piping hot idli/dosa and stand outside or inside and eat it. The idlis and dosa are served with a chutney (no sambar) and they do have a limited menu (by which I mean no vada to the idli). But you will not miss the spread. Easily, one of the most delicious dosas in Bangalore.
Must Try - Sabakki Dosa, Sabakki idli, Thatte idli (its as soft as cotton), Pulav
2. Pooja Dosa Camp - Banaswadi
This unassuming place has my heart when I want a place for comfort food of idli, vada and dosa, that too Tamilnadu style. A small place, which you can easily miss, is a popular take-away and stand, eat & go kind of place in the area. Weekends are usually a bit crowded but if you go before 9am you will definitely not be disappointed. The idlis are soft, the sambar is great, the vada is amazing. The pongal-vada combo is a hit as well. Dosas are okay for a first time try.
Must try - Idli, Vada, Pongal.
3. Veena Stores - Malleshwaram
In the heart of bustling Malleshwaram is a humble Veena Stores which has been around for decades. Locals throng to the place for the delectable South-Indian breakfast of Idli, Kesari, Vada and Upma, Karnataka style. You will notice it cuz of the crowd around it. As the name has it, started a store, it has still retained the same size and charm, despite the business it generates.
Must Try - Upma, Kesari bath, Idli, Vada,
4. Airlines Hotel - Lavelle Road
One of the oldest eateries in Bangalore, it is known for its relaxing atmosphere under a banyan tree. Very crowded on Sundays, you can enjoy the masala dosas coupled with the Old Bangalore charm. You can either sit there and enjoy your meal or just park your car and order and eat in there.
Must try - Masala dosa, idli vada and coffee/tea
5. Natraj Chole Bature - Indiranagar
A Sunday favourite, Natraj Chole bature is a small shop in the by-lanes of Indiranagar. Enjoy the hot, steaming, round baturas with yummy chole and chutney... and hen feel content about the sunday and life in general :)
Must try - Chole and bature
6. Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room - Basavangudi
An iconic place near National College, this is one of the oldest eateries with decades long patronage. Enjoy the delicious South-Indian breakfast of masala dosa soaked in ghee and crispy vadas.
Must try- Masala dosa, rava dosa, vada
7. Koshy's - St Marks Road
Another icon in Bangalore, Koshy's has been frequented by the elites of then Bangalore. Sundays are special with a different menu offering Appam, stew, cutlet, eggs etc - both veg and non-veg options.
Must try - Appam and stew, Cutlet, coffee
8. Go Native - Lavelle road & multiple outlets
One of the newest places in Bangalore, this offers healthy breakfast options from across India. My fav has been the Pesarattu and Guntur idli (it is not often you see pesarattu as a n option on menus). The spinach neer dosa is also worth a try.
Must try - Pesarattu, spinach neer dosa
9. Komala Refreshments - Cox town
A 40yr old restaurant with breakfast options. I went there for the Mangalore buns. This is made of sweet bread with banana mixed and deep fried. This is a traditional specialty of the Mangalore region of Karnataka. The restaurant also offers other options amongst idli, vada and their specialty masala dosas.
Must try - Mangalore bun, masala dosa
10. Mulbagal dosa corner - Jayanagar
Named after a small town in Karnataka, this is known for the Sabakki idli and the famous Mulbagal dosa soaked in ghee. A great place for families, it has a god seating space where you can enjoy your breakfast in leisure. Don't forget to wrap your meal with the amazing filter coffee.
Must try - Sabakki idli, Mulbagal dosa, Filter coffee.
Hope you enjoyed this collection. Do try these out!
