Shargole Monastery, a tiny but well-known Gelug or Yellow Hat sect Buddhist monastery, is located in the Kargil district’s Shargole hamlet. The monastery has an idol of Avalokiteshvara, a bodhisattva or enlightened being who represents all the Buddhas’ compassion, as well as three images of Tara Devi, a Hindu deity. Artists from Tibet crafted the goddess figure out of wood. Visitors may also see the Cantilever Monastery from the gompa’s balcony.
