Kannur, the enchanting district in Kerala, known as the "Land of Looms and Lores," not only boasts picturesque beaches, rich folk arts, and vibrant weaving industry but also stands tall as a beacon of plastic-free living.
Achieving this feat in a mere five months in 2017, Kannur's remarkable journey serves as an inspiration, proving that determination paves the way to a sustainable future.
In November 2016, Kannur district initiated a campaign against plastic pollution, embodying the slogan "Nalla Nadu, Nalla Mannu" (Good village, good soil). With the objective of eliminating plastic carry-bags, they embraced handloom-made bags crafted by cooperative societies. Their ambitious goal to become plastic-free by April 2, 2017, was remarkably achieved, setting a shining example for others to follow.
How was this feat achieved?
Achieving this remarkable feat involved a systematic approach. The sale and use of plastic carry bags, bottles, and disposable articles were strictly banned. Obtaining permission from district officers was mandatory for using disposable items at public gatherings, including weddings. Violations such as dumping plastic or disposables in public areas, roads, or water reservoirs resulted in hefty fines and prompt action, ensuring strict enforcement of the regulations.
To foster cooperation, shopping malls, super and hypermarkets, hotels, catering agencies, and auditoriums proactively adopted handloom-made bags and boxes for food packaging.
The government played a vital role in raising awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution, contributing to the successful accomplishment.
Rigorous monitoring of roads, alleys, and water bodies ensured the prevention of any dumping activities, safeguarding the district's plastic-free status.
The establishment of the no-plastic zone has had a profound impact on both tourists and local residents, fostering environmental consciousness among citizens. Kerala, often referred to as "God's own country," has always been renowned for its natural beauty, and the government is committed to preserving and nurturing the state's pristine environment.
