Explore the Hanthana Mountains – Unforgettable Hiking Adventures

Tripoto

Rising above the landscape in all its majestic beauty, the Hanthana Mountain Range is a treat for those who love the great outdoors; here are some insights to help you prepare for a trip.

Planning the Hike

This range can be found near the hill capital, Kandy, in central Sri Lanka. It features seven peaks and there are several routes to take; arguably, the easiest one is from the 4th Mile Post on the Hanthana Road, while you get an access point from the Upper Hanthana Lodge at Peradeniya University too.

Keep in Mind

It can get misty so ideally, begin hiking and trekking early morning and make the descent by 3:00pm; having a guide or those familiar with the routes will help. Bring comfy clothing, though it can get windy and rainy too. Wear hiking shoes, bring water and snacks, have insect repellent and be wary of leaches.

The Paths Ahead

The footpath to the first peak is not difficult and can be reached in about half an hour; the second peak is also easy to access and offers amazing views. To reach the highest point, you need to take the route up to the 3,800-foot high Uura Kanda; the panoramas across Kandy and the Knuckles Mountain Range are breathtaking indeed!

Hiking Highlights

As you hike along forest paths and over rocks, you will come across tea plantations, pine trees, little streams, bovitiya flowers, mana bushes, butterflies and more. Home to over 100 bird species, Hanthana is also ideal for birdwatching and you may see everything from raptors to the yellow-fronted barbet.
