Day 1 of our Sri Lanka trip started with the visit to the famous cave temples of Dambulla. This is one of the 8 world heritage sites in Sri Lanka. Situated around 150kms away from Colombo, Dambulla sits in the centre of the famous Cultural Triangle of Srilanka. The other famous cultural sites like Sigiria, Anuradhapura, Polonaruwa and Kandy can easily be accessed from Dambulla.
It is one of the best preserved cave temples in the country. Its situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding plains. One has to climb a flight of stairs to reach the cave complex. Tickets for entrance can be purchased at the ticket counter in the base of the stairs.
Most important are the 5 caves which contain paintings and statues. The temple complex dates back to 1st century BC. Various kings added to the art and architecture of the temple as power moved across Sri Lanka from one city to another like Anuradhapura, Polonaruwa and Kandy.
A must stop for those who are doing the cultural circuit of Sri Lanka.
