Known as the hill capital, Kandy lies amidst the mountains of Sri Lanka offering an enchanting getaway to experience a rich cultural and natural heritage; here are some of the best things to experience.
Visit the Temple of the Tooth
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is part of the Sacred City of Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It houses a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha and within the complex, one will find shrines, museums and the Royal Palace; in July / August, it’s also the focal point of the spectacular processions of the Esala Perahera.
Wander Around Kandy Lake
Beside the temple is the picturesque Kandy Lake, an ideal place for a morning or evening stroll. There’s a pathway with trees (mind the crows which perch above!) around the lake and as you walk along and take in the beauty of this area, you may spot wildlife too be it swans, pelicans, monkeys or water monitors.
Explore the Royal Botanic Gardens
Don’t miss the chance to explore the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya. Easy to reach for those staying at a holiday bungalow in Kandy, these former royal gardens feature diverse flora and colourful blooms; notable attractions include the avenue of royal palms, an orchid collection and the cannonball fruit tree.
Watch a Kandyan Cultural Show
Amongst the best things to do in Kandy to experience local culture would be to take in a Kandyan dance and drum show. Traditional Kandyan dancing and drumming have a unique flair and witnessing performances with acrobatic dancers, lively beats and sometimes even fire breathing, is a sight to behold!
