Thajiwas Glacier is a mountain glacier near the town of Sonamarg. It is one of the most easily accessible glaciers in Kashmir and is visible from pretty much everywhere in Sonamarg. Thajiwas glacier is referred to as ‘The hidden jewel of Kashmir’
We can access base of Glacier by Foot or Pony. Romantic views all around. You can do sledging, snow biking, skiing etc. A must visit place in Kashmir Valley.
Our 2nd trip to Sonamarg; the first time we visited Zojila Pass and this time we wanted to visit Thajiwas Glacier.
Thajiwas Glacier Entry Fee: There is no entry fee for the trek. It is open and free for all tourists and travelers. The only money you will pay is for the pony if you want to hire one.
Upon arrival at Sonamarg we planned to trek to Thajiwas Glacier. The most difficult task was to avoid local guides who keep insisting to take Pony ride.
The pony owners in this area are a real nuisance. They literally harass tourists and will do their best to trick money out of you. Be very careful while dealing with them.
Why do I say that? It is because the pony owners or the so-called ‘ghode-walas’ think they have a monopoly on this route. If anyone wants to go that way, he must hire them for the purpose, or shouldn’t be allowed. This is the very reason why they got that road shut down because then no one would hire them otherwise.
We started our trek from Sonamarg taxi stand at 12:30 pm and reached the Glacier around 2:30.
The 5 kilometers long trek passes through lush green pastures, and a beautiful forest, and ends at a viewpoint from where you get a clear view of the glacier.
We tried to trek via trails rather than roads I was enjoying the trek, however for my wife it was difficult since she never trekked before. We then used the roads rather and reached the Glacier.
Once you reach near the Glacier you will find a lot of stalls serving water; tea; coffee; maggie. etc.
The Sind river flow is quite strong near the Glacier and looks so beautiful.
After an hour spent roughly at the Glacier we started to trek back and reached the Sonamarg bus stand in 1 hour 15 minutes which was quite fast.
