With Amarnath Yatra right around the corner starting from June 30th, here's good news for pilgrims.

From 2022, there will be direct flights from Srinagar to Panchtarni which is the last drop off point 6 km before the shrine. Located at a high altitude of 5,486m, Amarnath is one of the most popular and difficult destinations to visit the holy shrine of Lord Shiva.

Direct helicopters will make the distance shorter and the journey to the shrine much easier.

Present route:

The traditional route which has been followed over the years starts from Jammu. From Jammu, you take a bus or taxi to cover a distance of 315 kms to reach Pahalgam. Or you can take a flight from Srinagar to Pahalgam.

Pilgrims can then camp at Pahalgam or Chandanwari and trek till the Amarnath Cave temple crossing Pissu Top – Sheshnag – Panchtarni. This route usually takes almost five days.

The other shorter route is from Baltal which can be covered in one to two days. However, this route is more challenging because of the steep mountains. You can reach Baltal from Srinagar via a bus, taxi or flight.

From Baltal, you trek to the Amarnath Cave temple crossing Domali– Barari Marg – Sangam.

New route:

You can get a direct flight from Srinagar to Panchtarni which is just a 6 km trek away from the Amarnath Cave. With the new route you can avoid traveling time to Pahalgam or Baltal.

Earlier helicopters till Panchtarni were available only for the VIPs.

As the holy pilgrimage resumes after a gap of two years, the government is anticipating heavy rush. Hence, the new helicopter route to ensure a smoother journey. For security reasons, over 50 drones would be flown on both the routes. The yatra would last for 43 days starting from June 30th - August 11th.
