Ladakh! As they say, is the land of many passes. It’s the only place I have been to, that, despite of having extensive barren lands is awe-inspiringly breathtaking. Each picture you take here becomes a postcard. Also, I have not yet met a single person who has visited this heaven and has come back disappointed.
So, what’s in it that makes it so amazingly beautiful and unique? I figured this out when I went for my first ever trip to one of the highest plateaus of India. I have mentioned a few that I visited, so you know where to make memories at. ;)
1- Monasteries Galore
Since Buddhism is followed by a major portion of the population here, you will find innumerable prepossessing monasteries all over. You should definitely include them in your itinerary as as they are an epitome of inner peace. Listing a few that I visited.
a) Hemis Monastery: one of the largest and most popular monasteries in Ladakh
b) Thiksay Monastery: It has a 49 ft statue of Maitreya Buddha- largest in entire Ladakh
c) Diskit Monastery: Diskit is one of the most beautiful and the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh
d) Shanti Stupa: This is a beautiful place atop a hill that attracts a lot of tourists to Ladakh and is spectacular to watch. It is one of the most magnificent and peaceful Buddhist monuments you could possibly see.
2- Lake Pangong Tso:
A lake amongst the popular tourist attractions in Leh Ladakh. It offers an awesome site for camping and is the current hotspot for all travelers.
3- The Very Famous Rancho’s School:
Yes! The very famous Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad from 3 idiots. :D Ever since the release of 3 Idiots, this school is raking in the moolah! The premises also have Rancho’s café. It’s a must visit if you are in Leh.
4- Hall of Fame:
Hall of Fame is a museum constructed by the Indian Army in memory of the Indian soldiers who laid their lives defending India in the Indo-Pak wars. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our soldiers to ensure the safety and security of our country.
Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers:
It is breathtaking to watch two rivers meet with the backdrop of the soothing mountain valleys. Zanskar is blue in colour, on the other hand Indus is green. When these two meet, it’s a scenic view for the visitors and fascinating to watch.
6- Magnetic Hill:
It is a gravity defying hill located near Leh in Ladakh. They say it has magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill. When in Ladakh, you must experience this phenomenon once.
7- Kargil war memorial:
A trip to Leh Ladakh is incomplete without a visit to Kargil and the Kargil war memorial. Kargil war memorial, built by the Indian army following the war with our neighboring country is frequented by travelers. It also has a memento shop but the main attraction of the whole memorial is the Sandstone wall, in the open, which has the names of all the Indian army personnel, who laid their lives during the Kargil war. Visitors to the memorial can also see some of the peaks that the Indian army captured back from Pakistan.
8- Nubra Valley:
The Nubra River Valleys offer divine scenery, wide landscapes, huge mountains, pretty trails, sand dunes and the Shyok River flowing midst the valley is sure to take your breath away.
9- Khardungla Pass:
You have to pass through this hyped, highest motorable road while visiting Nubra valley. This pass offers enchanting views of the valley and the twirling roads that take you up the mountain. The air is clean, the view is scenic and you feel like being on top of the world. All of the above have made Khardung La a popular tourist attraction.
10- Leh Palace:
It is a former royal palace overlooking the town of Leh. The model is of a Tibetan palace. It is nine floors high. The walls of the palace are constructed with wood and mud, creating a soothing and pleasant temperature inside. The entrance of the palace is decorated with wood carved figurines. Although the palace is in ruins, it’s still a sight to watch. The most enjoyable part of the visit is venturing to the uppermost floors for the view.
These are just a few of the innumerable scenic beauties you can witness in this alluring heaven. So next time you plan a trip to this place do make a visit to all of the above and much more.
