Khardung La, at 5,359 metres, is the world’s highest motorable road. It is proudly announced by a sign that greets tourists upon their arrival. The realisation that one is travelling on the highest motorable road is as thrilling as it gets.

It’s a high mountain pass in the Karakoram Range, north of Leh. Khardung La (La meaning pass in Tibetan) is located around 40 kilometres from Leh and serves as the entryway to the Shyok and Nubra Valleys. The pass provides breathtaking views over the valley and the highways that weave their way up the mountain.

Khardung La is a famous tourist destination due to its clean air, beautiful panoramas, and a sense of being on top of the world. It is extremely vital for India since it is used to deliver supplies to the Siachen Glacier.

The Border Roads Organisation maintains the Khardung La Pass, a popular tourist destination in Ladakh, and various types of vehicles, from two-wheelers to big lorries, use it.
