The Department of Tourism in Kashmir recently organized the 'Kashmir Saffron Festival' on the 1st of November 2022 in Pampore. Aimed at familiarizing tourists with the process of saffron cultivation and harvesting, the festival witnessed students and locals from neighboring and local villages alike, adding up to a footfall of over 200.
As per the Tourism Department officials, "The main aim of the festival was to engage more and more people in saffron cultivation to understand its essence, and involve citizens, especially youth."
The event organized as a collaboration between the Agriculture Department, local cooperatives, and saffron growers had many activities lined up with the major highlight being the traditional folk song performances. The students of GDC Pampore also organized a cultural program on the occasion. Several other elements such as the Run4Saffron, Pedal4Saffron, and painting and photography competitions, etc. added to the event and made it a huge success.
The event was graced by the presence of the chief guest, Divisional Commissioner Pandurang K Pole, who emphasized the importance of saffron cultivation globally, and mentioned the steps taken by the government to improve saffron production ranging from enhanced irrigation facilities to increased technological support.
The Department of Tourism also noted that the event got an overwhelming response from stakeholders, saffron growers, the civil society of Pampore, along with the tourists and locals present at the festival!
