The history of Avantipura Ruins

The temple was built by King Awantivarman in the year 853-855 CE. Previously known as Viswasara, the ancient town which was then a capital as well, was founded by King Avantivarman. He built many Hindu temples in this region, only some of which exist today due to vandalism by Islamic invaders. The temples of Kashmir do look very different from many ancient temples in Kashmir and elsewhere in India.

Things to see and do

The temples have groups of figures of both sexes engaged in drinking and many other activities. The sculptures can be seen on the front wall of the entrance and the walls of stairs. Half a mile up is temple dedicated to Shiva.
