Kashmir is no doubt one of the most visited hill stations in the country. Winter in this region turns it to a wonderland. Landscapes covered in thick blankets of snow and backdrops with the snowy peaks and partially snow-covered pine trees is what makes Kashmir so magical during the winter. Conditions can become extreme very fast, but that cannot stop you from enjoying this winter land in its full bloom!
Apart from the views and amazing food, Kashmir has a lot of other experiences to offer.
1. SKIING
In recent times, Gulmarg is evolving as a hot spot for people interested in skiing. You can have a day of skiing, even if you are a beginner and have not tried it before. You can buy a day pass at the ski station near the gandola station and enjoy the day gliding down the snowy slopes.
You need not carry gear, as it can be rented at the Government rental shop near the ski station. A pair of boots, sticks and skis should cost you around Rs 800 a day. You can also get an instructor to guide you, but remember that most of the instructors here are local Kashmiris who know how to ski. So if you need a certified person, make sure to ask your guide. An instructor could charge you around Rs 2500- Rs 3000 for a days session.
Also, Gulmarg is an off- spite ski location. So, the 3-4 slopes that are available for skiers are not groomed on a daily basis and might turn bumpy at some locations. You may want to keep this in mind if you are a beginner.
2. SNOW MOBILING
This is one of the few destinations in India that offers snow-mobiling. You can book a snow mobile ride at the spot for about Rs. 2000- Rs. 2500 for 15 minutes. You can drive the snow mobile under the assistance of the driver along the fixed route that takes you to 3 points, where you can click a few pictures or enjoy a hot cup of Kahwa.
3. GANDOLA RIDE
Whether you are an adventurer at heart or not, this is something everyone must try at Gulmarg. The cable car takes you to Phase I and Phase II at a price of Rs 740 per person. It has a different charm to enjoy the beauty of the white slopes from above.
4. SLEDGING
Sledging is an amazing experience you can get in Gulmarg. You will be seated on a wooden sledge behind the driver and it will be a 7km downward slope. It will cost you about Rs 1500, but its definitely worth it. Also, the fact that another person is going to be pulling your body weight, and then climb up the slope too, makes it absolutely worth it, so we would personally request you to not bargain with them. It’s a very tedious task for them and they thrive on the money they earn out of this activity.
We would not recommend this activity for senior citizens or people with back issues, as it tends to get rough at times and may result in injuries.
5. SIKARA RIDE
Though we found the Sikara ride in the Dal Lake in Srinagar very overrated at first, but as we went ahead, the view was amazing. However, it is very important to let your boat guy know that you are not interested in shopping. Because, otherwise, you will be flocked by a lot of boats and people trying to sell stuff to you ranging from saffron to gemstones and will miss out on enjoying the calm and unbelievable beauty.
It tends to get chilly on the lake, so make sure you are layered up. In peak winter, there may be a chance of the lake being frozen. So check with your tour operator before planning the itinerary around this activity.
6. HORSE RIDING
The Pony back ride is a highlight in Pahalgam. It is a unique experience to go horse back riding in snow! That is also the only way you can explore what is called ‘Mini Kashmir’. It costs about Rs 4200 for 2.5 hours and cover 3 main points. It is a fun experience riding on the slopes, however, it is quite un-manicured. So it is advisable to wear sports shoes that can be washed, as you may ride in muck upto your knees. We skipped this one as we are big time animal lovers and did not feel it right to sit on those cute little ponies.
