Enchanting Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer stands tall on the ridge of yellowish sandstone crowned by the fort that is situated at the middle of ‘The Thar Desert’.

Jaisalmer is even a sought out destination for the people in love, their romance would find a way at the banks of the Gadsisar Lake that is a beauty to adore. It is one of the scenic attractions of the city, surrounded by temples and shrines of Amar Sagar.

It is an oasis by a rainwater conservation lake that is responsible for the entire water supply of the arid city.

Unlike any other heritage site this Jaisalmer fort still has an active population residing within its walls. The fort is actually built on a small hill locally known as Trikuta.

The fort walls are made of red sandstone, the uniqueness of these stone is that the colour significantly changes according to the position of the sun. So throughout the day, you will get hues from light yellow to dark oranges depending on the sun and your position of viewing. At a particular time in the later afternoon, the fort glows like a gold with bright yellowing orange colour thus the name Sonar Kella.

Second half of the day we headed to the Sand dunes, for a perfect blend of fun, enjoyment, adventure, and scenic views. Who doesn’t love to spend a wonderful night under the sky and soak up in the beauty of nature? Well Jaisalmer, the colorful city of Rajasthan offers an awesome choice of camps. We chose “Camp paradise” and were offered a package which included camel safari, cultural show, breakfast and dinner.

This Desert Safari Camps is nestled on the beautiful Thar Desert in Sam Sand Dunes. You’ll appreciate the surrounding natural beauty and enjoy the stay in the camp with all the modern amenities. If you seek some solitude, then this serves the ideal place for you. Get a glance of the beautiful Rajasthani dance performances, and then don’t miss the camel ride.

Camel rides are a fun way to explore the desert. The rocky ride and the slight possibility of slipping and falling off in the sand, make it all the more fun. While Jaisalmer Camel rides are for short distances, you could then take a jeep desert safari to explore the sand dunes and the local life and people of the Jaisalmer desert. Must mention we enjoyed one of the most stunning sunset ever, looked like it was out of a post card.

It was getting dark, so returned back to desert camp. Now, it was the turn some cultural programs. Programs included some music programs and folk dances.

Musical evenings are the heart and soul of desert camps in Jaisalmer. After you have spent an engrossing day fighting dust and sand across the Thar, it’s time to rejoice yourself with some refreshing dance moves and folk music in a relaxed environment. Rajasthan has a history of soulful and enlivening music, which makes you tap your feet to its tune. Overall it was exciting. A very simple traditional Rajasthani dinner was laid out which did enrich our taste buds.

From Sam sand dunes next morning we headed towards Jodhpur. It is always exciting to travel somewhere new, but I will miss the camels and the very cool city of Jaisalmer!
