Udaipur is a major tourist center in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is well connected to most of the major cities of India and has many tourist attractions in the form of lakes, palaces, temples, etc.
There is a unique site in the city near the Royal Cenotaphs, which is known as ruins of Ahar Civilisation. It’s popularity is unfortunately lost in the various other tourist attractions. Limited excavation of the old site has been done some time back and excavated site can be visited by taking tickets from nearby Ahar archaeological Museum.
Ahar civilisation was flourishing from around 3000 BC to 1500 BC, also known as Bronze Age along the banks of Ahar River in southern Rajasthan. At the same time, a similar civilisation was flourishing around Banas River. These civilisations were contemporary to the Indus valley civilisation.
At the entry of the gate of excavated site one can see Soak pit constructed with bricks and also remains of residential structures. Beads, seal and ornaments of that era can be seen in the museum.
Ahar Museum has sculptures and other articles from different period, showing the continuity of civilisation in this part of Udaipur. And the best part is, you can’t feel lost here, because the person looking after the premises helps out as the guide as well (no extra charges).
Any visitor interested in understanding the continuity of civilisation in and around Udaipur can visit this site, it barely takes up half a day. Post which, one can freely enjoy the local light and sound show in the palace or the local folk dance (4:30pm-5:30pm and more shows) at the cultural center near by.
