With 2 significant Jyotirlings located near Indore, it becomes a must visit for any Shiv devotee. We planned a quick visit to both the Jyotirlings.
Ujjain - Mahakaleshwar: The biggest differentiating factor with this temple is that the ling gets energy from itself as against other Jyotirlings which are established with Mantra. This temple is located on the banks of Shipra River, about 60 kms away from Indore. Another peculiarity is that temple is south facing, which is difficult to find. This temple is also one of the 18 Shakti Peeth temples where the upper lip of Sati Devi fell, when Shiv was carrying the corpse. One can comfortably reach Ujjain in 2 hours and best time to visit is around 4 AM when the Bhasm Aarti happens. Ladies are not allowed inside the shrine. There are restrictions on clothing and carrying mobile phones. There are a lot of smaller temples located within the premises of Mahakaleshwar and one can easily spend an hour outside, post Darshan. Be prepared to be haggled by many pundits on the way, asking for religious offerings.
A quick, 10 mins ride to Kaal Bhairav is must. It is a temple where the Lord is offered Liquor. One can buy an offering of their choice to the deity - A must visit.
One can do both Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in one day, if they leave early in the morning. Mahakaleshwar to Omkareshwar is a 4 hour road journey (About 70 Kms from Indore). Omkareshwar temple is situated on an island, which is in the shape of Om (divided by 2 hills) and banks on the holy Narmada River. One can also witness the meeting point of Narmada and Kaveri river. Legends behold that Lord Shiva sleeps here, so Shayan Aarti is an important ritual here. After reaching the base, one needs to take a boat ride or take the longer road route. As the bridge flows through holy river, one can see devotees offering coins to the river.
All in all, an overwhelming religious trip..
