Delhi, being in the Northern Plains region of India, experiences extreme climates throughout the year. In summers the heat can get to our nerves and the winters can be bone chilling. But whatever the season be or the reason be winter is on its way and it is time to pack our bags and head to have the next best vacation.
And what is better than the sparkling and festive month of December to head to the nearest and best destination and have the best time at the end of year. I am going to list down ten of my favorite destinations in India for that December getaway.
1. Udaipur, Rajasthan
It is one of my favorite cities in India and the city is at its best during the last month of the year. The weather is pleasant and the city’s grandeur is always attracting attention of travellers from all over the world. On top of this, the Shilpgram Crafts Festival acts as the cherry on the cake for all those culturist travellers.
2. Goa
When we talk about winter destinations, Goa is destined to top the list. The unending parties, clear blue sea, amazing weather, the wild crowd, all kinds of water sports and CHRISTMAS are enough reasons to hop on an airplane next month and get crazy. Moreover, it is rated as the best place to celebrate New Year’s bash and accompanying this, Sunburn and EDM festivals do not let the mood simmer down.
3. Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh
Do not like too much of crowd and noise? Then head up to the mountains of Himachal Pradesh and seek solace in the Tirthan Valley of Kullu region. The temperature is on the lower side but the feel of cool breeze on your face and warmth of a bonfire under the sky full of stars is out of this world. The Tirthan river is utterly clear during this season and a day or two spent for fishing trout would be nice.
4. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
The straggling golden sand and the high rising fortresses are the gems of Jaisalmer city, which lies at the heart of Thar Desert in Rajasthan. During this month the sun becomes merciful and the heat is tolerable. Therefore those who want to witness the remains of true royalty of India, they must visit this city as it is the perfect time and season for travellers.
5. Andaman and Nicobar Islands
After monsoons, the water of the sea starts to get clear and by October, the peak season starts. However, I prefer December month to visit this enchanting island because the water is crystal clear and best for snorkeling, scuba diving and other underwater activities. The unending white sand beaches and turquoise blue water are calling all those beach lovers.
6. Bir Billing
Bir is a small village in Himachal Pradesh and for the unaware, it is also the paragliding destination of India and also famous for spiritual studies and meditation. The season for paragliding is best in December due to the amazing weather and wind speed. The base for beginning paragliding is at Billing which is 14 kms away from Bir and the paragliding ends at Bir.
7. Auli
If you are one of those people, like me, who love the sparkling white snow like white frosting on a cake, Auli must be on your list. This hill station is caked with snow during this month and is a major hotspot for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Winter Olympics are also hosted there and therefore if you love some adrenaline rush in the cold weather; it is time to gear up for Auli.
8. Rann of Kutch
What is more beautiful than acres of dried white sand “The Great Rann of Kutchh”. During the monsoons this land is submerged under water. However, December also calls for the beautiful Rann Utsav that is organized every year during winters and one must visit this festival at least once in their life. The cultural extravaganza has folk dances, food, stalls and what not for everyone to savor. The Great Rann of Kutchh is magical during this time of the year.
9. Nagaland
Nagaland is the crown of Northeastern India. The beauty and vivid landscapes offer the travellers an amazing experience that lasts a lifetime. And if you plan to visit it during December, you will be fortunate enough to be a part of the most famous Hornbill Festival. The state is full of life and you can get in touch with the local people, culture, food and drinks.
10. Kashmir
Winter is incomplete without a trip to Kashmir. Trust me, every month has a different shade in the Kashmir valley and during December all you can see is white. You can visit this region any number of times but still it would call you back. From Sonmarg to Srinagar and from Gulmarg to Leh Ladakh, every place has something amazingly beautiful to offer. You should not miss Kashmir in winters because it is paradise in true form.
Now, what are you waiting for, pick one destination from the list and start packing. The last month of the year must be finished with a vacation to some of the most beautiful places of the country and you should not miss the beauty of nature at its best during this time of the year.
