In a very recent move, two of India’s beaches - The Minicoy Thundi Beach and Kadmat Beach in Lakshadweep were accorded the international ‘Blue-Flag’ certification. This certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark and is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. The move has now taken the total number of beaches accorded with the label to 12.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India’s remarkable coastline in a Tweet that read, “This is great! Congratulations, particularly to the people of Lakshadweep for this feat. India’s coastline is remarkable and there is also a great amount of passion among our people to further coastal cleanliness.”
While Lakshadweep’s Thundi beach is a paradise for island lovers with its aqua lagoon waters and sandy beaches, the Kadmat beach is more popular for its water sports. Both beaches comply with all the 33 criteria required to qualify for the Blue Flag status as mandated by the Foundation for Environment Education.
